Making a decision

I believe in "innocent until proven guilty" and act likewise. It is not right to act as if a person with an unregistered version is by definition using a pirated version. Think about it. And secondly it aslo isn't in the interest of N3V to chase away potential customers by the local Gestapo here.

I agree with that which is why I prefer to assist with helping the person register their versions where possible where the user has mentioned that they have a version (which is the case in previous posts from this OP).

Unfortunately past experience hasn't helped on that front but I usually only suspect issues like that if the user declines to register their version.

Yeah I did get the point, you wanted to trash on DTG by making it sound that everything is out of reach because of the price. Doesn't help someone trying to decide on which to get. "Get a loan for $3500" says it all.

Think I'll pop my head round the door at RWA for some sanity, Bob!

And unlike buying a Trainz DLC direct from N3V, if for some reason you don't like a DLC for TS2018 so long as you refund within two hours and don't make a habit of it, you can get your money back.

The main obstacle to building routes in TS20xx isn't so much the complexity, just that Trainz has much more in the way of readily available assets and in particular for adding in terrain textures. But satisfactory results can be achieved in both sims if you approach with the correct state of mind. :)

Where does it say you are obligated to register your version? Nowhere is the answer. So, you also condemn a person just because (s)he hasn't registered the game.

I don't have any DTG Stuff due to it only being available on Steam, however I do look at what people are posting on forums.

Been watching over the years a couple of TS NG routes, one although it looks quite good but wouldn't satify the rivet counters relies heavily on several payware routes for stuff that is easily found in Trainz, or would not take that much effort to create, the other sadly unfinished due to the creator passing on, was being done to a high standard entirely with created assets no payware involved. My Interest being they happen to be routes I have and am doing in TANE, always interesting to see how the other side does it ;o)

Point being it looks like you could create payware free routes in TS whatever, just might require a bit more effort to source or create the parts.

Registration is essential to access parts of the online services (including the Download Station and parts of these forums). It also helps the person if they have a version of Trainz as it shows on their timeline (which also helps on identifying what version they have).

But, again, participation on this Forum does not require product registration at this time.

and back to the OP's original question.

The reason I selected Trainz rather than other rail simulators was the wealth of assets available. 400,000 plus available on the DLS plus tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands more available on other websites.

I do not believe any other rail game offers so much versatility. So, no matter what era or location you are interested in, trainz has something for you.

True although it's advisable to avoid potential issues (one reason why some do request people to register their versions).

In terms of the OP's question, I've only had partial experience with DTG's products and not in a good way (items not appearing, DLC costs).

TS2018 can load google maps right in the editor, makes it a lot easier. In my opinion, Trainz' best feature is the session editor. Now that is a powerful piece of kit.

I forgot to mention this. It's a big plus for TS2018. The plus for Trainz is it's ground resolution. I believe it's 5m. Where TS2018 is 8m

My two cents worth. If you like shuttling back and forth along realistic routes, DTG is the way to go. I find them boring.

For fun - T:ANE is my simulation of choice.

I'm not positive, but I believe there was a 3rd party program to help with this. Though the name "2m lidar" is not familiar to me.

This metadata record is for Approval for Access product AfA458. Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) is an airborne mapping technique, which uses a laser to measure the distance between the aircraft and the ground. Up to 100,000 measurements per second are made of the ground, allowing highly detailed terrain models to be generated at spatial resolutions of between 25cm and 2 metres. The Environment Agency’s LIDAR data archive contains digital elevation data derived from surveys carried out by the Environment Agency's specialist remote sensing team. Accurate elevation data is available for over 70% of England. This dataset is derived from a combination of our full dataset which has been merged and re-sampled to give the best possible coverage. Data is available at 2m, 1m, 50cm, and 25cm resolution. The dataset can be supplied as a Digital Surface Model produced from the signal returned to the LIDAR (which includes heights of objects, such as vehicles, buildings and vegetation, as well as the terrain surface) or as a Digital Terrain Model produced by removing objects from the Digital Surface Model. All available to download for free from the UK Environment Agency and works with Transdem. 2 metre is best for Trainz with a 5m grid, smaller would be pointless.

Thanks! Now I know what it is. I recall there was a program that imported a higher resolution into TS2018. I never it needed because the DEMs I used where already higher resolution.

Another difference between the two sims is the night lighting. I'm still waiting for the Trainz crew to come up with a better way to deal with night lighting and how light shine is rendered on other objects.
