How hard was SP hit by the 1980 economic downturn? I understand that they decided not purchase enough new motive power and since the late 1960s into the early 1970s their physical plant hadn't received the maintenance and upkeep needed but to what extent did it have on the railroad? Did the downfall of American automobile manufacturing within California , lumber production of Oregon, produce being put on trucks instead of trains, port traffic and heavy industry in the bay area fading away along with deregulation have such a substantial impact due to being too reliant on it for traffic and a revenue generator or was it not so much of using it as a crutch and just a sign of the times here in America? After all changing needs means changing times normally and it seems all of this was happening all at the same time.
