"LA CRESCENT, Minn. — At approximately 11 a.m. Nov. 19, a Canadian Pacific train moving at low speed derailed 13 cars at River Junction north of La Crescent. The derailment blocked CP’s ex-Milwaukee Road Chicago-Twin Cities River Subdivision main line. There were no injuries and no hazardous materials were involved.
Amtrak No. 7, the westbound Chicago-Seattle/Portland Empire Builder, detoured on BNSF Railway’s ex-Burlington Route main line between La Crosse, Wis., and St. Paul missing stops at Winona and Red Wing, Minn.
A small amount of sand spilled from some of the derailed cars. No cars or product came in contact with the Mississippi River, which is adjacent to the railroad at the site.
CP dispatched personnel and equipment to begin the process of reopening the line. Following inspection, CP was able to begin moving trains through the area on an adjacent track early this morning. Amtrak No. 8, the eastbound Empire Builder, operated via its normal route between St. Paul and La Crosse today.
