Route Diagram Creator?

I think you could use Microsoft Office Visio to create route plans, you might have to make your objects at first, I don't think there is a object set like that, but once the objects are made or found it could work real easy.

It's not free, but I bought the 2016 Professional version for around $50 US online.

Hello.

Recently, I have taken an interest in a new way to create route plans. This new path involves making a "route diagram" of sorts, something like what you would see in a subway. An example is found here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Railway_line_legend

I am not sure where to look for something like this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

The simplest and cheapest way is to use Paint on your Microsoft Windows program. It's easy to draw or brush a line, then draw a small circle (bullet) on that line, (the circle overlaps the line neatly), then add your text alongside the bullet. Add color where you want it and it's done.

Cheers,
Roy

I was going to suggest the same thing, just use Paint. You can start making drawings of the stations (see them as icons) and save each one, then you can insert any of those in your drawing of the route and add text It's not hard, really, I did that a long time ago too.

Why make the icons? There are a gazillion icons available - just Google 'Railway Icons'

That is why I wrote "You CAN start making drawings of the stations", that's entirely up to the OP. I don't see anything wrong with suggestion something.

How about something made for making model railroad layouts?

You can make objects for the ANYRAIL program and get exactly what you want. http://www.anyrail.com

But i would personally use anyrail with the track of my choice.

I use anyrail to make my layout and control it in JMRI. http://www.jmri.org

Using a program that is used for model railroading would probably be your best bet.

You can probably even use the basemapz program to turn your diagram into trainz layout. http://dhobh.net/Trainz/Basemapz/basemapz.htm

I use Illustrator to make metro-style track plans for games.

Here is one I did for a city I made in Cities:Skylines

(click for full-size, it's big)

Anyrail is great but it is $37 for the full version. The demo only allows you to place 50 pieces of track. I will buy the full version in the future though, it really is an awesome digital layout builder.

I used it to make the JMRI layout file for my n scale dcc model layout, 226 feet of it. It not a realistic layout, its a fun one.
Anyrail made making the jmri layout file much much much eaiser than using the jmri tools with that much track.
It also lets you set the block names, configure blocks, turnouts, its definitely needed if you do model rail dcc with a computer/raspberrypi.
I made a very basic file, track only, shown below because I only needed it for JMRI, i may one day do Trainz routes with it. (now only if trainz could talk to JMRI)
