Hello from France, my screen for this week : a ballast train entering Toulouse Matabiau station...

Cheers, Marc

In the 1950s at Darlington on the East Coast Main Line, ex-LNER Class K3 2-6-0 has charge of train No.1850, the 06:00 Class E freight from York North yard to Gateshead Park Lane sidings. Loose coupled and unbraked, the train is limited to 35 mph and braking is in the hands of the steam braked locomotive and the brake van (caboose) attached to the rear of the train. It was an art to handle a loose coupled train, pulling away slowly to take up slack in the couplings and braking steadily to avoid clashing the wagons and vans together. This train could extend to 75 vans or wagons, so avoiding snatching was a priority, in order to avoid breaking one of the coupling links, dividing the train.

After traveling to the west coast and spending a week there doing movie work, Cotton Belt #819, disguised as SP GS-8 #4487 for the movie, is headed for home. She will stop in a couple minutes to check all the bearings on the locomotive and top off with water.
