TANE Upgrade

Fed up of rubbish frame rates (literally stuttering with hardly anything on screen if I use medium shadows) from my machine as follows:

i5 3450, 8GB RAM, ATI HD7770

My research suggests the CPU game hasn't significantly moved on and that upgrading my i5 to a new i5 would not be worthwhile. So I'm looking to up the graphics. I'd originally been looking at a 1050TI however I have now talked myself in to a 1060 6GB.

Am I right in my conclusion that a 1060 would be a quantum leap, and that my CPU will not be holding me back?

Many thanks

Hi Gds.

For TANE, it mainly relies on the GPU. I would have a good GPU working in conjunction with a good CPU to see the full performance of the GPU. I believe the i5-3450 processor is a decent ivy bridge CPU. The HD 7770 is equivalent to a GTX 570. Since the GTX 7770 only has 1GB of VRAM though, I think the routes would run okay if they are not using alot of high resolution textures and the map is not too large in file size. Also, depending on the assets that you use or what area of the map your in will also determine if there is stuttering or not.

I am currently using a GTX 1060 SSC. I have noticed a decent increase in performance in TANE with the settings turned up close to max. The GTX 1060 runs pretty cool since it is using the Pascal Architecture. My GTX 570 started artifacting in games and ran extremely hot with TANE. Since I am using an old quad core AMD CPU, I don't think I am seeing the full performance of the GTX 1060 but you will definitely see a good performance increase with a GTX 1060. If you get the GTX 1060, you should get the 6GB variant.

gds - Concur with malikrthr - You would indeed see a quantum leap in performance with such a replacement card for your current ATI HD7770.
Here are some 3D PassMark comparisons for your consideration. The G3D Mark for the GTX 1060 is 8,742 compared with 2,189 for the ATI HD 7770.

T:ANE is very GPU-centric: The more powerful the graphics processor, the better the framerates and smoothness experienced in this remarkable railway simulator.
Your current Intel Core i5 is perfectly capable for supporting such a powerful card as the GTX 1060.

Bottom line is that the further you ascend the Tom's Hardware Gaming GPU Hierarchy Ladder, the better your performance in Trainz will be!

Thanks for your replies, I have gone ahead and ordered the GTX 1060! Looking forward to getting to know TANE a bit better :D
