Unbelievable, this whole landscape must have been very elaborate.

A hobo cooks up a late dinner. It's a possum that he caught in one of his snares earlier in the day. Possum is tough meat and needs to simmer for a long time before it breaks down into something edible. But "Boxcar Eddie" Vogel has plenty of time. He is residing at the edge of a scrap yard near a gutted, derelict caboose on an abandoned siding. He wasn't always a railroad hobo. When he was 18, Eddie enlisted in the army. Two months later, Pearl Harbor was bombed and Eddie spent the entire war in combat. He stayed in the Army and ended up serving in Korea as well. A North Korean machine gun ended his army career when the communists overran the frozen Chosin Reservoir. When he recuperated, he married his boyhood girlfriend and fathered 2 boys and a girl. They lived a fairly normal life in Brooklyn where he worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a welder. His marriage ended 8 years later when he caught his wife in bed with his best friend. Eddie didn't bother with a divorce. He just went out and got drunk and started his new life riding the rails. He gets a pension from the Veteran's Administration, most of which is spent of cheap booze. That's pretty much his only expense. He snares his dinner in this traps, and steals enough potatoes and carrots and other items for his stews from gardens and garbage and he answers to no one. "Boxcar Eddie" survives.

I've always been bad at writing stories, so here goes...
