A boozed-up motorist drove along Long Island Rail Road tracks for nearly a mile in Queens — until his car hit the third rail and burst into flames, authorities said Monday.
Afterwards, the man simply got out of his burning car, strolled up to astonished rail-yard employees and said, “Sorry,” according to authorities.
Ronny Mora, 25, drove onto the tracks at the Borden Avenue crossing in Long Island City just after 11 p.m. on Sunday, authorities said.
He sped his vehicle for as far as it would go along the tracks, with his tires straddling the rails, until the undercarriage struck the electrified third rail near the Hunterspoint Avenue station, officials said.
Mora’s car ended up a twisted, burned-out wreck.
It was miraculous that he not only survived, but walked away, sources said.
LIRR trains were delayed between Penn Station and Jamaica for nearly three hours after the incident.
The FDNY worked to douse the fire and remove the car while MTA employees scrambled to fix the damaged third rail, officials said.
MTA cops showed up and hauled Mora away moments after he allegedly made his mea culpa to the stunned railroad workers.
“After leaving his car on the tracks, the suspect approached LIRR employees by Borden Avenue, telling them he left his car on the tracks,’’ said MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan.
“The employees called the MTA Police, and officers who were already en route to the fire were diverted to Borden Avenue, where they found him,” Donovan added.
Mora, who lives in Corona, Queens, is now facing charges of unlawful interference with a train, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, officials said.
He also was hit with charges of criminal trespassing, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
