Anyone remember these?

Just stumbled across these pics.
Can't believe it was about 12 years ago! Sheesh!

Seems like a lifetime ago! :D

Lol, yeah, I know what you mean.
I have both a NES and an Atari 2600, both with a large catalogue of games, still in working order (somewhere in the loft).

But what I meant about those pics was that it seems like 5 minutes ago I sat down to write those programs.
And it's actually 12 years!
Frightening!

Well, if it's true that one "human year" equals twenty "computer years" then you wrote those programs in 1775.

;)

Good Morning Smiley --

I have all of your stuff from your website from yesteryears in my external hard drives -- Actually, it's a very very old EHD... I have 3 others EHD, thereafter, but
I always kept the old with all of the trainz stuff back then from trainz 1.3 from 3rd party programs that came out during that era, etc .... how time flies, uh, Smiley? ...

Wow .... 12 years, indeed!

Hello Smiley, My first and only upload to download station was a scenario written with your wonderful Stopgap2 program. I will always miss the true scenario!

It's incredible to think it was that long ago!

No I feel Old. Was that long ago since we did scenarios

I know. I still remember when Trainz 1.3 came out with Trainzscript, half implemented, and full of bugs. Exciting times.

Wow, that's really cool to hear. Thanks.
I miss scenarios too.
The current Session Rules and Commands system is excellent, and has come a long way, but there was something exciting about raw trainzscript! :)

I have a working NES as well that I fixed up. I have a great list of game ranging from games like Super Mario Bros to The Legend Of Zelda. It's fun to play every once in a great while. Anyway, even though I never have used your program smiley, I'll just say that it looks like a useful tool to use!

This is amazing stuff, Smiley. This was before my time with Trainz, but I remember the early days too. My bro and I were talking about this yesterday. He came across one of the early demo videos about Surveyor. I think it was one that Rob Shaw had put together. My bro showed me the video and I downloaded the early Trainz demo which crashed on my system because of my ATI8500 which crashed just about every game I tried. I roughed it out until December 2003 when I had upgraded my video card to an early GForce model and got TRS2004. I've been here ever since!

So much has changed yet so much as stayed the same when it comes to computers.

That scripting interface is interesting. Does it still work for the stuff we use today or can it be updated? :)

Dear John,

You really missed the good o days when you install an item -- It took trainz (1.3) 30+ minute to start! -- Back then, installing and then waiting for centuries was a norm.... that happens to today, forget it, sir, there would be chaos! LOL

SMILEY!

Dear Smiley,

Now you got me going down memory lands -- some many good and sad things have happened during the days of trainz 1.3 to now ... my parents passing on, me dealing with medical issues, but happy times like my kids being born... both girls are 6 now! Trainz has always been here, and yes, stopgap, the scenario creator, was the really big boy then! I think those who roam the forum LOVED that program! --- this is all before rules and commands for those reading this post, and just wondering!

Smiley, if I am not mistaken, was either second or third person that came on board with 3rd party software ... The gentlemen from the UK, that created that yard layout and the other program (forgot both names of the item in question) was first, I think!

@ZeldayBoy: Thanks man. Appreciate it.

@John: Thanks. It was a lot of fun making it.
In those early days, my computer could barely run it, and I remember the joy of building a new computer just for Trainz, and seeing it running smoothly. :)
No, it wouldn't work with today's Trainz.
There were no rules or commands or sessions in those early days.
If you didn't write script, then there was no way to automate anything.
That's why I wrote the programs, so that people who weren't programmers could use them to set up logic in the Trainz world, and then my program would compile their pseudo code into real Trainzscript, and allow them to create real scenarios, by creating logic blocks, and ordering them.

That's why I called it StopGap, because I felt it was something that would do until Auran got around to creating something similar themselves, which they eventually did with Sessions, Rules and Commands.

Talking of which, are my commands Hornz, Uncouplez, etc, still built-in to Trainz?
I guess I'll see when I buy T:ANE. :)
Would also like to know if my Weather Rule still works (the one with the raindrops landing on the screen).

I'd love to get back to writing stuff for Trainz, but I think that all bases are pretty much covered these days.
I will be getting back to modelling though.
Got some good plans for T:ANE in that area.

@Ish: Yes, life really does have a lot of up and downs over 12 years. I've been through the same.
I had a lot of fun with people's response to StopGap, and I'm glad it gave some enjoyment to some people. Good times.
The person you're thinking of is probably TafWeb (Terry Franks), and his amazing program was TrainzObjectz.
What an amazing program that was. We'd have been lost without it, for sure.
And I remember his scripted shunting layout too. The first of it's kind, and I spent many hours on that.
He was definitely first with 3rd party programs and scripting.
I know he left before I did. I hope he's well. The granddaddy of the Trainz world!

Lots of bases to be covered I think, always especially good to get content creators back.

And yes, I dabbled with StopGap, but got distracted when SCS flashed its ankles ;)

Smiley, sir ...

Yep, that's one -- the first as far as I can remember!

It's kind of funny, and you might agree to this, seeing and reading threads about folks complaining about trainz.... doesn't do that, or it doesn't do this, etc blar blar ... I just wonder how would those same folks would feel having trainz 1.3 ... no commands. no rules -- when you install something it took forever for trainz to launch!

It is why you, sir and Terry made trainz so much easy to work with -- we wete never spoiled, and we appreciated the 3rd party software makers, the pioneers! Maybe I'm too sensitive, but I guess, the older one gets the more one appreciate the pass, in this case, trainz past, and what Stopgag 1 and 2, and what TrainzObject did for us... made life easy, from a trainz point of view!

--And, forgive me but I could not resist since you said above that all of the bases have been covered, well, what about something like this? (Below, in bold letters I suggested this to N3V but they never post it: (what do you think?)(it's the same posted send to them)

Hello N3V,
This feature could be a filter for CMP+
Upon clicking on it, it'll display a list of your layouts
You select that layout, and then it display everything about that layout!

1. Signals
2. Junctions.
3. Station names
4. How many boards
5. A diagram of the map route
6. An option to print out map
7. If it contains seasonal changing objects
8. How many rolling stocks on map
9 How many locomotives on map
10. Length of track -- total use in miles / km

etc .... etc ..

You take care now, sir!

Ishie

Ah, the "good ol' days"...

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way ..."

Thanks for the nice comments Ish.
And most of the things on that list of yours are doable...so you never know! ;)

Oh, no need for thanks, Smiley  --

And, as for my suggestion, just something for you to scratch your head, no expectations here, of course, sir!
