As the title says, Norfolk Southern SD40 (not SD40-2) #3170, which is the first SD40 purchased by Southern, is being donated to some museum. It's been stored at Altoona since being retired in 2007. As of December 20th, 2014, it was having its blown engine being replaced with a working engine to get it back into operational condition and will be repainted into Southern's 'Tuxedo' paint scheme. The question is, what museum is it heading to?

Right now the likely candidates are the NCTM or the TVRM. On another note, SD40 #1580 has also been set aside for preservation and will likely go to the VMT.

It wasn't until after doing some research after posting this thread that I discovered the same info.

Yup, I would think that it would be more likely to go to the TVRM, since they are loosing the Southern GP30 they have there because there lease is up on it. Although I hope it goes to the NCTM so I'll be able to see it!

Is this the first NS loco to go to a museum?

Nope. A while back Norfolk Southern donated an ex-Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia to the TVRM. They've been planning on cutting off the doors on one side of the rear hood to show all the parts needed to make a locomotive work. Based on that, unfortunately for me, it'll probably go to the NCTM.

This is not the first engine donated by NS. In addition to the 3563 that went to Lakeshore and the TAG unit that went to TVRM, NS donated a good bit of engines and rolling stock following the merger in '82. For example, NS donated NW GP9 #620 and Southern GP30 #2601 to the NCTM in 1985.
