PC Rebuild

Hi Dave,

It's worth spending the extra $100.00 and would make the system somewhat more future proof. The I7-4790 is a great chip and will definitely support TANE and many other programs going forward. Keep in mind there is more to the chips than just the name. The I7 has many more pathways and branches, with the logic behind them, and a larger cache which makes this a pretty fast chip.

If we're thinking strictly for games then the Core I5 is a plenty sufficient processor. The hyper threaded functionality of the I7 is more optimal for creative workloads such as video editing where applications will utilise multiple threads. This in mind I would choose based on what is most appropriate for what your Grandson does.

Hi,
Back to the original post ...

I would suggest using the i5, and using the $100 for a specialised CPU cooler.
The standard CPU coolers are OK, but most of the gaming PCs have water coolers or enhanced air cooling. Trainz especially will drive the CPU quite hard.
Similarly, a good GPU with a decent cooling system.

All the best,
Colin

Actually Colin the standard coolers aren't bad for the current breed of I7s, though they could be better of course. The only time I'd worry about it is if I were overclocking.

My preference would be to go for an i7 if you've got the option. Of course, depends what GPU you marry it with....
