USA Pics (electric)

If you look...

Oh my gosh, it looks like a beefed up Little Joe.

If you look only at externals and statistics, that's a fair description. Under the skin, though, they weren't much alike: 3,300VDC for the MWR units, 11,000VAC with motor-generators in the W-1s. The W-1s had traction motors on all axles and (I believe) retained a full control cab at each end - useful for tunnel railroading, avoids having to wye between runs. The W-1s more resembled VGN's EL-2Bs even though those were single-ended in permanently coupled pairs rather than double-ended like the W-1s.

As for the colors... orange shows up against both trees and snow, the rest green or maroon to taste. 'Nuff said.

@normhart - great shots (Cos Cob needs coal)!

Actually in my little slice of New Haven the Cos Cob Power Station gets it's coal straight off the docks.

The string of hoppers was heading to the Dean Coal Mine where the empty string was dropped and a full string picked up

The full string was unloaded at the Edison Power Plant which supplies power for the Dover Springs Branch.

Both the coal mine and the Edison plant are still works in progress. :D

Those were the days, when clouds of coal smoke (and some coal dust from the mines and crushers) were the mark of healthy industry! :hehe:

BTW, impressive shadow of the conveyor in that first pic - which I happen to know consists of 8 polygons with a tiled alpha map.

TANE does some things very well. You got me started so here is the Dean Coal Mine considerably closer to my vision.

No electrics in this shot, sorry.

WARNING lots of images be prepared to scroll

how did you get that spark effect?

Most if not all of pweiser's electric locomotives include sparks. Some include sparks for third rail left or right, as well as pantograph.

Some other artist's electrics include sparking, mostly trams/trolleys.

Especially amazing at night with multiple units as Paul's sparks are random and increase in frequency with speed.
