If you look only at externals and statistics, that's a fair description. Under the skin, though, they weren't much alike: 3,300VDC for the MWR units, 11,000VAC with motor-generators in the W-1s. The W-1s had traction motors on all axles and (I believe) retained a full control cab at each end - useful for tunnel railroading, avoids having to wye between runs. The W-1s more resembled VGN's EL-2Bs even though those were single-ended in permanently coupled pairs rather than double-ended like the W-1s.
As for the colors... orange shows up against both trees and snow, the rest green or maroon to taste. 'Nuff said.
