Google Maps Railfanning Section (READ RULES!)

It always rains here! We don't call this New England for nothing. :)

I can't wait to see the pics.

What kind of trains did you see?

It was also really cold up there too! It was about 70 degrees in Delaware when we left and it was freezing up there, maybe around 40 degrees in Massachusetts.

I didn't get to see any trains in Haverhill, but I saw some in Boston and in CT on the way there.

When we went to tour Boston, I briefly saw some trains at this exact station when we were passing by.

I also got to get a glimpse of some commuter trains in Stamford, CT, at this station when we passed by it.

Other than that, I didn't really get to see whole lot of trains. Maybe someday I can go back to railfan. It seems like a nice area.

Right at North Station!

As you were approaching the station, did you see the sand and gravel company? The New Hampshire North Coast, a separate short line that serves them, from a sand and gravel pit located in Ossipee, New Hampshire. They also handle the freight around Newmarket, Stratham, Somersworth, and Rochester.

At Stamford station. If you go back in time to different periods, you can see the EMUs pulling in and out of the station and at the platform. What did you think of the old New Haven catenary poles? Those date back to 1907, and has been replaced in some places. The old black lattice poles plus the green triangular wire made the system very unique compare to the Pennsylvania. The New Haven also used 11,000 volts at 25 HZ, and the design is on the national historic register.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. Unfortunately, outside of some commuter trains, there's not much to see during the day as far as trains go. You might be lucky and pick up a local freight, but most freight is moved at night.

I don't remember seeing a sand and gravel company, but I just don't think I was paying enough attention to the surroundings to remember it.
And that's really interesting about the catenary poles! I had no idea they were that original.
And thanks for all the interesting information!

This is a little off topic, but I followed the tracks and noticed these large cranes: https://www.google.com/maps/@37.7422246,-122.3742828,3a,75y,70.39h,85.54t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1scOEXcMrqpxd36sxGB9R7fg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
I instantly recognized them because of the TV show Mythbusters, whenever the Mythbusters were filming at the 'Alameda Runway', which is Naval Air Station Alameda, these cranes were in the background. Turns out the Alameda Runway is across the bay from this place.

If you are referring to the center cab switcher, it kinda looks like a GE 65 tonner?

I was wondering about that as well.

That's pretty cool. I remember the TV show pretty well.
