Google Maps Railfanning Section (READ RULES!)

I was watching a live storm-chase with Daniel Shaw (Patreon subscription only) and I saw on his tracker that he was in Vernon. The first thing I do is check the surroundings for cool stuff and of course I found the railroad tracks and had to take a look. On the overhead view, there are two locomotives. One appears to be a SW1500 or an MP15 switcher as well as the GP38 we saw in the street view. On the ground, however, the view was different.

Oh.. Another Daniel Shaw watcher! How about Pecos Hank? Very few people take the time to "frame" tornado shots when time and opportunity allows. He does. Amazing videos.

Hank is doing great. He and Daniel did a Q&A session which I missed the other day, and recently they did a bit of silly dry ice voodoo to predict the storms in Texas yesterday. Both videos had me in stiches.

I agree both chasers, Roger Hill included, take that time to get the shots the right way. Check out Daniel's images on Twitter from yesterday. We saw 5-tornadoes in and around Vernon, Lockett, and vicinity. The last one Daniel framed right between two wind towers. Amazing stuff.

I chased on tour with Roger from 2008 to 2014 then again in 2016. Now it's too expensive for my budget and I'm too physically crippled to do so with back and neuromuscular issues to deal with the long van or car rides.

Cool shots!

The GN 274 is pulling some former MBTA Budd Liners (Budd RDCs) turned into coaches. The roof-mounted motors are disconnected from the drive-train and are used for powering the air-conditioning and power generators.

Cool shots!

In the last one, if you go back in time there's a CN and another nondescript unit, but you can't read the engine numbers because they're blurred out.

That's where the old GM&O E and F-units were rebuilt into FP10s for commuter service. It's sad to see so many of the building leveled now. I saw pictures of this place a number of years ago and the area was filled with all kinds of tracks and buildings back then.

Way cool shots. All.

Jack, you found some nice stuff out there in Golden, BC. Going back in time reveals some other equipment if you go down the road a piece, but naturally the camera changes dates just before we get close enough.

Arya, that unit is neat. I did a walk down the road and it appears the unit was pulling into the depot? I couldn't tell because the camera changes to a different date when I get close enough to the locomotive.

NorfolkSounthern1036:

If you go up on the bridge, you can see CN and a CSX unit off in the distance when you go back in time.

and some other green and white units I don't know the owner of.

Here's a couple of Santa Fe painted units switching.

There's also lots of UP locos all over the place.

Why the MBTA F40Ph 1075?

Good question. The MBTA has been trading in their ancient F40PHs for newer equipment. These units are quite old and date back to the early 1990s so they've seen a gazillion miles on them even though this unit has the newer paint scheme on it. If you look carefully, the windows have stickers on them. Naturally, we can't read them, but that to me is like dealer stickers on the used car in the sales lot.

Seeing this setup makes me feel less guilty for running various locomotives on my routes that don't really "belong" to the area. Whew!

Well, this is what I would say as the weak point of Streetview's algorithm for displaying the picture of each road...

If we stick to the latest shot (April 2019) of that road, we could see that the locomotive is actually going out of the depot and running LHF, since the loco is running on the track nearer to the road (the road itself is running directly on the eastern side of rail track). As the shot was taken on April 2019, the logo was still the ones introduced in 2011, and even the locomotive depot near Jatinegara station was still exist (as of April 2021 it has been already demolished for making way to new track for line heading to Pasar Senen and Tanjung Priok station).

Definitely interesting. Thank you for the background information.

This is definitely a weak point with the Street view.

Cool information about that F40ph!

Here's a shot of the back of a P42 in Beach Grove, Indiana.

Here's lots of other P42s.

I changed the time back and saw this too.

A switcher and I think it's an NJ transit behind it.

There might be some other locomotives in the area too.
