Google Maps Railfanning Section (READ RULES!)

For a time I was fascinated by the Alaska Rail Barge operation, which involves a large barge with 8 tracks and overhead racks for containers which is shuttled more than 1,000 miles (1609 km) between Whittier, Alaska and Seattle, Washington by a large ocean going tugboat. The rail cars and containers are unloaded and taken 60 miles (96 km) north to Anchorage, Alaska.

Alaska Rail #3011 a GP-40-2 and #30D12 which appears to be the same type of unit. I can't find any info on the unusual loco number. Could it be a slug?

Here's a poor image of the barge docked at Whittier.

Just for reference, here's a better image of the barge in an industry newsletter. Notice the tow cables leading off to the right into the water. A few web searches can bring up quite a bit about the interesting transport by barge operation.
https://www.inboundlogistics.com/cms/article/heading-north-navigating-alaskas-supply-chain/

A 2.5 mile (4km) long mixed use tunnel leads northward from Whittier. Highway traffic is blocked when trains are using the tunnel.

Headed north toward Anchorage -- looking for locos, but finding MOW instead -- here's a shot of ballasting and more MOW equipment to the right. The equipment appears in several years, so perhaps it is a storage area? In 2021, more equipment is in use further left/north, frustrating my search for trains. :)

Following the highway northward checking several years, a northbound passenger train _finally_ appeared, but Google won't give a close shot of it possibly for privacy constraints.

The street view car is headed south so this is the view where the northbound first appears.

Finally found a freight train headed by #4319 and #4317, both apparently a Progress Rail (EMD) SD70MAC, going south in another year. Not quite certain what loads are on the first few flatcars.

And caboose #1092 bringing up the rear. Notice how many "smokestacks" it has. Do you think it gets cold there?
https://www.google.com/maps/@61.062...h9dTCNuQ!2e0!5s20110901T000000!7i16384!8i8192

Using an elevated highway as a vantage point in northern Anchorage to view the railroad's facilities, a couple more locos are parked (too far away to read numbers). Panning to the right exposes some freight cars and lots of passenger cars. Also a long consist of yellow side dump cars filled with large rocks.

This post nearly turned into an essay. I hope it isn't too boring.

That's not boring at all, Dave.

The freight train is actually a track laying train for continuous welded rail. If you look at the equipment near the locomotives, you'll see rollers on them with motors and further back there are racks holding rails. I know because I watched one of these things in operation once and it was quite fascinating. I was lucky that I was on vacation and happened to be out bike riding and stopped at the nearby ice cream place located next to the railroad. My purpose was as usual to get an ice cream sundae and sit trackside and watch for any trains, but on that day, this was working instead so it wasn't a total dud.

The tunnel is odd. It's one way with cars needing to wait for trains too as well.

The dock area is interesting and looks very Asian Pacific and Not American. That setup alone would make an interesting route.

Great post Dave!

Actually, it is very interesting to click down to both ends and look from angles. It almost looks like it has some superstructure at one end that doesn't show in the company photo, and it is interesting at both ends to see pickups and campers and such perched on the top.

Following the highway northward checking several years, a northbound passenger train _finally_ appeared, but Google won't give a close shot of it possibly for privacy constraints.

I was actually able to click forward and backward a bit and get some fairly clear shots of this one. IT was abit haphazard though and hard to duplicate!

Finally found a freight train headed by #4319 and #4317, both apparently a Progress Rail (EMD) SD70MAC, going south in another year. Not quite certain what loads are on the first few flatcars.
https://www.google.com/maps/@61.0602...7i16384!8i8192
Looks like MOW? The second flat car looks like it has rollers to roll the rails forward? Just speculating, but maybe they are moving rails up to meet a MOW crew somewhere.

Odd to see two smokestacks at one end of the caboose, but as you say, maybe it gets that cold. Hopefully they use something like propane that doesn't have to be reloaded regularly! Does warm air move upstairs so the lookouts are comfortable?

Thanks again! These are great shots!

That appears real. The lighting and reflections make it look fake as if the reflections are a reflection-map image.

Those Napa Valley diesels are Alco PA1s. Alco PA1s have a square around the headlights whereas EMD E and F hood units do not.

Nice selection of locations, by the way. I poked a bit around the AZ and CA and that Warren Truss over the river is amazing. That area looks dusty, though!

Correction, the Napa Valley Wine Train uses former Via Rail FPA-4’s.

Here's a link to user maxwerks announcement. The screenshots look good, it requires TRS2019-SP3.

Looks cool! Thanks.

Anyway, here's my catch for today;

A derailed metro north car, a normal metro north car and tank car thats being used for liquid stoarge (I think) for the Dairy Cream right next to it. If you're ever in the area, stop by here the ice cream is second to none.

This has been nagging me every time I post a book; do you guys like my format (ie- novels that take up half the page)? I always feel self-consious for dominating the chat.

I admit I don't always look at all of them, but I always find something interesting! I was curious about this one, particularly the coaches, and I was curious about the blue and yellow tankers, but then I saw it was a safety train:
"More coaches and more saftey trains and depressed flatcars. I hope they feel better"

I had fun looking at your Denver posts,
and I like your phrasing sometimes:
depressed flatcars. I hope they feel better
peeking out from the bushes
I also was pleasantly surprised to see the postings of the model railroad clubs! The Columbia Gorge Club I may have to look up the next time I am in Portland!
Overall, I think your postings are legit (I won't bring up the rule about engine numbers again - oops, I just did!) and I enjoy them.
