Google Maps Railfanning Section (READ RULES!)

Nice!

Did you see this on the Pioneer Lines?

https://goo.gl/maps/r8oXpAuGL9q3ernw9

and on the EPRY, there's a switcher in one of the older pictures. Go down to the left to the crossing and look back. You have to change the date.

Now for the stupid part, the line was cut a few miles out to the left and it's becoming a rail-trail! :(

Definitely a disadvantage for us rail fans.

:-(

Yeah, it's not nice for us railfans when railroads get shut down and turned into trails. There was a RR in Delaware, called the DCLR that got closed a couple years ago and they paved over it and made it a bike trail. It's a nice trail, but I'd rather have tracks. I remember when those lines used to be active too, it wasn't too long ago.

That railroad museum in Lapahoehoe (Big island, north of Hilo) is run by an older gentleman and he has lots of stories of the sugar cane train that used to run north from Hilo to the cane fields. Lots of tunnels still exist. Because of the channeled nature of the slopes, it was mostly tunnels and bridges. It would make a great tourist train, but I think it is unavailable at this point. I think it would make a great short route in Trainz though! The old roundhouse in Hilo still exists and can be found with Google.

I've seen those in real life. Simsbury, CT is about 200 km from where I live and we've passed through the area while traveling to New York. The railroad equipment is there because of the former New Haven Farmington branch, now rail-trail. The tracks came up a long time ago, I think in the early 1940s. I eyed the ROW for a route project, but never got around to it.

Simsbury, sadly will never see any real trains today even if the line could be rebuilt. The region is stuffed with NIMBYs who would shoot down a rail project before the first meeting launched to discuss it.

Nice find. New Orleans, Louisiana (LA), has quite a lot of rail lines and action to watch down there due to the port area located at the mouth of the Mississippi River. New Orleans is also a crossroads on the Gulf of Mexico with lines that run east to west from Florida to California and North-South from Chicago down to New Orleans.

I recommend also look at the Baton Rouge area as well. There's quite a bit of rail traffic there as well with lots of short branches, industrial switching, and some main lines.
