Big day at the Vernon Steam Museum as CPR G5a 1201 backs out under her own steam after a fresh rebuild, ready for the spring tourist season

Speaking of tourists, once coiupled to her consist, 1201 poses rods down while she waits for the next trainload of steam fans to board for a trip packed with runbys and photo stops

The CNR has suffered a major derailment and fire on its main line through the Rockies this week. With the cleanup expected to take at least another week, some of their trains have been diverted to the CPR tracks for the interim. We join Joe at Clanwilliam, heading East in the early morning mist

Clanwilliam%2C-early-am.jpg

As we drive east, we run along a rather dramatic section of the stream the tracks are following

Moving-east.jpg

This stream seems to like drama

Dramatic-water.jpg

After a brief foray onto the south bank of the stream, it appears that the route surveyors decided that they liked the north shore better. Perhaps they were drunk?

Not long afterwards, we emerge to cross the Columbia River

At the west end of the yard, we ease past the Revelstoke passenger terminal

Passing-Revelstoke-station.jpg

East of the yard, we pick up another lively stream

West of Twin Butte, we meet Vaughan and his tanker train. It's getting a bit brighter in the valleys as the morning progresses

The signal just before the top of the grade stays red just long enough to make us come to a full stop. Starting from a halt on a 2+ percent grade is never fun, but at least we have lots of power on this train

Somebody seems to have suffered a casualty at Lauretta. Perhaps this explains why that signal was red

Wow, nice pics 64warhorse!

CN local passing through semaphore county. This part of the mainline is still guarded with semaphore signals that the railway plans on replacing in the near future.

Past the casualty at Lauretta, we see Damon, who has enough grain on tow to feed a major city

And at Albert Canyon, Phillippe waves as we pass his stack train

The river seems to be a long way down from here ...

Joe grumbles, as once again we need to come to a complete stop, on a steep hill, before the signal will go green

Another-short-red.jpg

As we approach Illecillewaet, we finally come out into the sun ...

Approaching-Illecillewaet%2C-we-finally-come-out-into-the-sun.jpg

... and meet Nick, who has been patiently waiting for us to get out of his way

Nick%2C-mixed-freight.jpg

Much to Joe's amazement, this time we only have to slow to 3 mph on a 2.24% grade before the signal goes green. A hopeful sign?

We pass under a snow shed

And meet one last train before getting to the tunnel

And finally, we reach the entrance to the Connaught Tunnel

Thanks! It’s actually protolanced. CPR had a few steamships with train connections and the terminals were always these big grand affairs. Just look at Victoria’s Steamship Terminal or the station at Port McNicoll Ontario.

I’m just not sure about the red steel under the glass dome if it matches the old style stonework of the passenger terminal and steamship offices
