One helluva storm and Trainz

My internet and phone have just been restored following a massive storm 6 days ago. The polar blast hit NZ with unprecedented fury. All of NZ was affected with snow, rain, high winds, and freezing cold.

I live in Wellington, NZ and we're pretty blase about wind gusts of 100kph. We jokingly call then zephyrs (light breezes). This storm was very different. First we had rain bucketing down softening the ground and causing flooding. Then the wind. Hours of 160kph gusting to 200kph on the hilltops. Huge macaracarpa and pine trees were being knocked over like skittle in a bowling alley, blocking roads all over the region. A red gum started leaning and rubbing against my guttering making weird groaning noises. Power went out twice for me but fortunately only for a short period.Others were not so fortunate and are still without power. Satellite TV was jumping in and out as the wind buffeted the antenna, or rain squalls masked the satellite signal. And then I lost my phone and internet connection. First time since TRS2006 introduced Content Manager seven years ago that the message on the redbar was appropriate. "Please check your connection." When dawn broke gloomily next day I ventured out to see what local damage had occurred. Wind was still at severe gale intensity. Amazingly I had rhododendrons, azaleas and roses still with flowers on them. Wellington plants are pretty resilient. My leadin from the streetpole to the house was severed. To make matters worse the overhead cable to our street was down. A huge tree limb had snapped like a twig and smashed down on the cable. The anchor pole, a fairly hefty telephone pole, was snapped in half and now was blocking the main service road between two suburbs. So now the road was closed as well. What with all the other higher priority damage linesmen were going to have to repair, it could be sometime before my comms would be restored and I could communicate with the Trainz Community again. The real railway was in trouble with seven breaches of the sea wall from 15m waves smashing into the shore. Wellington rail links are but a few metres from the harbour. Huge hunks of concrete were hurled onto the rail line along with every type of flotsam and jetsam imaginable. Track ballast was washed out and track gangs were working in atrocious conditions to seal the breaches in the sea wall, and then make the track safe again. Heavy equipment and materials could only be brought in from the ends along the tracks, and not from the sides due to the terrain.

I had plenty of supplies for such an emergency. While I waited for comms to be restored I decided to do some more work on TARDIS 3.7, my Trainz Asset Repair programme. And that is where I stayed for the next six days. No TS12 SP1 beta testing. No moderating the forums. When I finally was able to re-connect with the world and the Trainz forum, not much had changed. Another bot spamming the blogs. A couple of complaints of inappropriate language and behaviour on the forum, and other reminiscing about the good old days with the first computers.

Ah well, back into repair work. As a final note TARDIS 3.7 took care of 66,441 missing thumbnails in those six days. Outcome - no missing thumbnails on all downloadable DLS assets and builtins, other than those locked payware. Beats doing it manually.
I've also eliminated the uniform colour issue. Stopped counting but probably ~60,000.
Now on to the next problem. How to automate providing mesh-table for ~10,000 aliased assets.

G'day Ian,

I for one would be interested in what you worked out for the 'uniform colour' problem.

It has been annoying me for 2 days now.

Everyone from New Zealand and Australia please tell us more about your areas weather (expessed in Farenheight and mph please, for us metricly challenged trainzers).

I had no idea things were so bad down there, hope everything hasn't been smashed up too bad. All I've been seeing on my Facebook feed are jolly photos of lots of new snow on the Whakapapa and Turoa ski regions.
On the other hand, local weather here consists of choking haze.

Actually the skifields have more snow than they want. They are having to helibomb the slopes to control avalanches.

You also have to understand that as a country that relies heavily on exporting dairy and agricultural products ( I seem to remember a stat that we feed 30% of the world's population. Don't know how true that is), snow is a mixed blessing. It provides much of the water we need. At the same time a storm like this can strand thousands of sheep and cattle and prevent them getting to winter feed (kale and silage) and water. This is when you start to see people in all walks of life helping out the farmers.

There are also many people in Christchurch who are still in sub-standard accommodation two years after the big earthquakes (we can't build new real estate fast enough), who now have to contend with floods and bitterly cold weather.

Currently, Wellington weather is pretty good. dry, cool and no wind. That will assist repair crews to get things back to normal ASAP. Kiwirail expects to get all train services running today Thursday. "All track is now in place and a tamper machine has been in operation through the night to level the track. Restoration of signalling and traction will need to take place before services can resume. A test train has been run last night. Once track re-opens a speed restriction of 40kph will remain until the track settles in a few days time."

For those of you who still use non-metric measurements I sympathize with your dilemma. But there are plenty of converters available on-line. It's about time you guys caught up with the rest of the world. I have enough problems with TV ads made overseas that still insist on using acres instead of hectares. quarter pounder Mac burgers, and heaters that have temperature in degrees F.

Tardis 3.7... I am missing something here. Would this be the ultimate solution for all the problems we encountered on the upgrades? An explanation would be nice.. Thanks

Information about TARDIS 3.7 is in ianwoodmore's blog on the Blogs page. As yet, it has not been released, but when it does, it will be on my tutorial site.

I went to Welly on the weekend, still a bit of damage around, few trees down they havn't cleaned up.

Good to hear you got throught it ok there Ian, been right up there on a hill like that might have been a bit scary for a bit.

Cheers

Hi Lots and others,

I no sooner got comms than it went out again. Subsequently my phone and internet been down for over two weeks. Only just restored. Chorus has crews from all over NZ working in Wellington 7 days a week to clear a backlog of 900 faults.

This has stymied my final testing of TARDIS 3.7 and getting the installer loaded for upload to Shane's website.

Not making any promises but I'm working hard to do that SOON!!

Sounds like you're having a lot of bad luck there Ian.

Hopefully your ISP can sort out the connection so it doesn't go down again suddenly.
