@Yoshidon, it depends where you're modelling - is it a prototypical route or is it fictional? If prototypical, will you be using DEM? I'd say you need to have a decent knowledge of the SR and what gave it it's identity - remember it was formed from the LSWR, SECR and LBSCR plus a handful of smaller companies and these three heavily influenced the different sections. Swanage was LSWR, and this is reflected in the station building style and signalling, but LBSCR and SECR routes looked very different.
