Oct 26, 2013. The future of Trainz revealed

Here are the five 5 key components of today's announcement.
    1. Mac and Mobile
    2. TWOR - Trainz: World of Rail
    3. Brand new game engine - E2
    4. TANE - Trainz: A New Era
    5. Kickstarter Project November 13

    1. Mac and Mobile:
These platforms are a big part of our strategy in 2014 and products will continue to be upgraded with new products and new content coming in 2014 and beyond.

    2. TWOR - Trainz: World of Rail:
    • STEAM game store exclusive release.
    • We are very close to releasing the beta version of TWoR (create a Steam account to be eligible).
    • Targeted primarily at the 53M gamers on Steam who haven't yet played a train sim (out of 54M total gamers registered).
    • TWoR is more casual the Trainz Simulator, more like Trainz Driver for iPhone.
    • Introduces Challenge Sessions - points scoring, more competitive gameplay, but also has Simulation Sessions for the more hardcore train fan.
    • Players earn points to rise through the ranks from Passenger to Master Controller.
    • Free to Play plus additional routes and sessions available through DLC
    3. Brand new game engine - E2
    • Custom-built from the ground up to be optimized for train and rail simulation
    • Backwards compatible wit existing Trainz content.
    • Currently being integrated into the core Trainz code
    • Full world shadows, multi-core for performance, 64 bit, all the latest graphics techniques and shaders, enormous draw distance.
    • Development will continue to add more features.
    • Eventually all products - Mac, mobile, World of Rail and Trainz "mainline" will leverage E2
    4. TANE - Trainz: A New Era
    • The extension of the Trainz Mainline incorporating the core elements of Trainz (Surveyyor, Driver etc)
    • Not an incremental update, but a huge leap forward
    • New engine for graphics and performance but also a lot more than that
    • Each system reviewed, evaluated and tested as part of the integration process
    • Complete physics overhaul plus new graphical tools for monitoring and adjusting parameters on the fly
    • PLUS Two of these Four features:
    A: Procedural Animated Spline Junctions
B: Super-Elevated Track + Improved Cab Sway + Train Motion
C: Smoke and Weather Affected by World Objects
D: Interlocking Towers / Track Blocks (UK: Signal Boxes)
(Which two of these four is voted by you in the Kickstarter Project - see below)

    5. Kickstarter Project November 13
    • Kickstarter is the worlds largest crowdfunding platform with 50,000 successful projects already
    • TANE Kickstarter Project launches on Kickstarter.com on November 13, 2013
    • Kickstarter is a place where creative industries like us and passionate fans like you work together to bring projects to life.
    • The project will be explained in full detail so you know exactly what you are getting.
    • Rewards range from $10 to $8,000 (most are $25-$90) - most include a full version of TANE, plus unique features like having your own high-poly 3D avatar in-game (so in effect, rewards are very much like a pre-order system)
    • Your task is simply to choose a reward level, and pledge your support towards the project.
    • If enough people pledge support and we reach our fundraising goal, we receive the pledge funds, we create and deliver TANE and you receive the product of your dreams.
    • If we don't reach the initial goal, no money changes hands.
    • We have done most the work already and this Kickstarter project allows us to raise the funds to add the final features, final polish and testing.
    • To reach our goal we simply need enough people to pledge their support.
    Summary (Why Kickstarter? Why now?):
    • We are now within sight of the finish line - delivery goal in December 2014.
    • We have already achieved enough building the foundations to know we can achieve these goals.
    • These are not pie in the sky dreams but concrete plans.
    • The engine work is substantially complete, and we know exactly what you guys want in terms of features for TANE.
    • Kickstarter is the perfect way for us to deliver the product you have been dreaming of.

The KickStarter will have a target that will have to be met if N3V are to receive any of the funds. I would presume that the new engine will rely on the success of the KickStarter.

As far as I understand from a diagram:
      - TWoR is going to be a free to play,
      - with payware DLC's
      - with new and advanced game engine
      - compatible backwards so I would be able to import my TS12 content into new engine?

TWoR with new and advanced game engine
In future, not in first release. First trainz with new engine will be "Trainz: A New Era".

You have my support on Kickstarter.

Make sure it can use ambient occlusion and G-Sync.

Well done guys. I'm available for beta testing.

But if we are to wait till Dec 2014 for TANE (good choice of name by the way), please can we fix TS12 SP1HF3 problems along the way.

I will only support this advancement if this is done. Many others feel the same way.
Reality check is that since this is a Kickstarter Complete Overhaul do not hold your breath.

      Hi!
I am soo happy, super news.
Just a question - HDR rendering - could you say some details about it?
Will the game game engine support TXAA?

HDR Rendering - A SpeedTree Must Have along with Per-Pixel Lighting.
Oh what can we do with this in SpeedTree.

      Great Example Of HDR Rendering:

      Hi Tony, Interesting news for sure, and certainly worth following, even for someone like myself, who has written off the future of Trainz based on the latest trend of DRM and DLC/Internet conection relations...Which brings questions...(following comentary/questions formatted to align with your announcement);

      1. Mac/Mobile: Not of great concern for the moment, based on my "hardware" ownership/use.

      2. TWOR: As much as I hate Steam, I think, if I follow correctly and am not presuming too much, that you might have struck GOLD from a marketing stand-point.
--Free Play on Steam to draw in new users, who will inevitably purchase DLC at the least, and hopefully follow through with either Mobile, MAC, or PC versions (aimed at the "gamers" of the world, I suppose).
---I see this as a very good move by N3V, well thought-out I think.
-a. Will this then signal the end of the "Steam version" of regular Trainz, or will you continue to partner with Steam selling "full version" future releases of the PC version? (I would like to see ONLY TWOR on Steam, and "regular Trainz/Trainz-T2" be limited to PC and MAC Digital or Disk versions only).
-b. Can you expand on the "logistics" of this version/platform ?
--Will it require a huge download of software, then play on Steam (like current Trainz, Steam version), or will it be 100% "cloud" like, with minimal user hardware impact ?
--Will previously purchased Trainz PC/Mac version DLC be playable in TWOR ?

      3. New Game Engine (E2): "Eventually all products - Mac, mobile, World of Rail and Trainz "mainline" will leverage E2"
--Please clearify; Is this regardless of (4) below, the Kickstarter program for a new PC version, or is it ALSO dependant on (4) below?
--Has any testing of E2 actually taken place, such as "dropping" it in to TS12, to see if existing Content and Tools function in their current state, with the advanced Game Engine?
--If "Kickstarter" project fails (reality check), can/will this E2 game engine be available as an "update/upgrade" to existing TS12 owners?

      4. TANE - Trainz: A New Era: Interesting, but confusing too.
--The wording of the description here sounds more like a "Business Plan", which is all well and good (and sounds promising), but in the Forums, you elude to Trainz-T2 (new PC Version) also being tied to this TANE venture, so please clearify; Is "TANE" a Business Plan, or is "TANE" the "kickstart" of a new PC version of Trainz ?
-a. If this "Kickstart" project does NOT get the funding you hope, will a new PC version of Trainz using the new E2 game engine still be in the works, but postponed/extended timeline, or will the entire venture be scrapped ?
-b. You have proven that you are listening to the current Trainz Community, in regards to requested core aspects and future features, but are you listening when it comes to DRM/Software Piracy Protection measures and DLC restrictions/Internet connection requirements ?
---Is N3V willing to revisit their position on the implementation of DRM/DLC restrictions ?
-c. "Kickstarter" "pledges": Can/Should this be looked upon as a safer alternative to "Pre-Ordering" a future release of Trainz-T2, or is this STRICKTLY a "Fund Raiser" for developmental purposes, and even those who pledge an amount equal to/greater than the retail sales price will STILL have to purchase Trainz-T2 when it gets released (after December 2014) ? (edit-the "rewards" vs. "pledge" part is confusing to me, as I am not familiar with Kickstart programs).
---I think this is very relavent, when combined with "b." above. I will gladly "pledge/pre-order" if N3V will rethink their implementation of DRM/Internet requirement and DLC version limitation ("future DLC" usability in pre-TS12 SP1), but if N3V are going to "lock-out" all their previous customers (those who may not be able to afford to buy new software every 6-12 months), and REQUIRE and "update/upgrade" to use the newest Add-Ons, then I will be DAMNED if I am going to donate funds to a project I do not "believe in".

I think what we need to see/hear here is more about N3V's intentions for their "Structure", or "How" these new developments will be implemented...What is the "thinking" behind changing your position on DRM, Previous Customers, DLC Useability, and the "Independant User" (those of use who do not like "Multiplayer" or having to deal with a bunch of kids crashing trains in an MMO environment).

All I can say is, KingConrail put it perfectly, especially his last paragraph. An answer would be appreciated as, for now, I'm going to assume N3V will employing DRM and, if anything, going to ratchet it up. It goes without saying that I cannot support any project that employs DRM.

I thought that N3V was a commercial company so why isn't it offering shares if it needs money? Why do we need to give it money so it can sell us a new version of the game?

      Mystified Karen

Karen - I'm guessing you haven't heard of crowdsourcing.

Whilst N3V are a commercial company, even commercial companies sometimes decide to use sites like Kickstarter in order to drum up interest and support for developing a new project and getting funds for it. It may well be that shares isn't an option for them due to stock market issues or perhaps things work differently in Australia.

This is one of my ideas for future game updates.
How about a version that includes just being the signaler in control of the layout setting signals from a big control panel etc.
I know I like to drive on my layouts but sometimes i just want trains on auto to go as I want them to go via my own signalling way of control.
Just a idea but want to but that out there for others to maybe support it too.

      Cheers
      Dave
