Hi Ed,

Certainly hope you are well these days, dear friend!

Actually, when Will stated that he's using NYC TA and other contents in building his layout, I searched the DLS for any Chicago related contents (subway/elevated)! To my surprise there was none, so I decided to go with this project!

I'm having fun with it!!

Hey Peter,

Yeah, that's was part of my plan, since it seems the vertexes will take forever to merge, etc:'( ... if I do it separately then it will become 4 pieces instead of one!!

Ish, if there is nothing I use from all your creations but one thing (which i doubt will be the case, I am sure I will use lots of your stuff) it will be the support girders!

Any change you can make the support girders (or feet) of the elevated structure an expandable spline? And Backdate it to 06?your girders look a billion times better then the old UTC ones I have been using, they would match up to FloridaRailMaster's stuff easier in terms of detail. If they were an spline, they would be Perfect for my use! Since the El structure goes over streets and alleys, there is not always a consistant distance between feet (girders) it changes quite a bit. So being able to change their width would be helpful! Hell for the Northside main line, making supports with a single "foot" just as a regular building would save me a huge amount of work! I thought I was going to have to make some of this stuff myself!

One Sign I know all to well is the car spacing sign. Its about 8inch by 8inch, yellow, about 3 or 4 feet tall and numbered 4, 6, or 8, with a 10 in some places in the Loop. They are used on curves or stations to alery the engineer how many cars are clear of a curve or switch

I'm planning 4 schemes. Mint Green and Alpine White, Charcoal and Silver, Bi-Centianal Red white and Blue, and Spirit of Chicago.

All of the last three had black painted on the area of the Windows, well, blackish color, it was not all that dark. The Green and White scheme was the only one without black windows.

Actually thats kind of a L myth. Only about half of the 720 6000 series cars used PCC body's, windows, and doors. The rest were built from new parts, which can be seen on the last order of 6000's, with rounded doors rather then the earlier straight doors.

The question about Blinker Doors I can't answer, there is a reason they are called that, but I don't remember what it was

The CTA cars have two doors per side and usually have transverse seats. NYCTA IRT cars have three doors per side and have longitudinal seats. The first IRT cars had two doors per side and some transverse seats. Are the CTA cars as crowded as NYCTA cars?

Okie in the cars ...

As for the textures, what do they represent? For example, if I make a station using blue and white strips (texture) then that would represent one of NYC's stations!

Just show me a picture of any station from Chicago that you took and made textures from so I can match it up!

the white & blue tile (http://s68.photobucket.com/albums/i6/PerRock/chicago/Station_Textures/?action=view&current=Clark-lakesubway.jpg) would be in the Clark-Lake Subway
http://www.chicago-l.org/stations/images/MilwaukeeDearbornSubway/clark-lake04.jpg

the red tile (http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i6/PerRock/chicago/Station_Textures/clybournsubway-1.jpg) would be found in most of the other subway stations.Dearborn Subway (http://www.chicago-l.org/operations/lines/dearborn_subway.html) & State Subway (http://www.chicago-l.org/operations/lines/state_subway.html)

the red-white & blue tile (http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i6/PerRock/chicago/Station_Textures/rosesubway.png) would be used on the Roosevelt-State Subway (http://www.chicago-l.org/stations/roosevelt-state.html) (and I have one labled for North-Clyborn (http://www.chicago-l.org/stations/north-clyborn.html) however I can't find a pic of it, so I fear it was a mistake)

The Blue (http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i6/PerRock/chicago/Station_Textures/platformstripe-blue.jpg) & Yellow (http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i6/PerRock/chicago/Station_Textures/platformstripe-yellow.jpg) Saftey tiles are used thruought the CTA. Primarily the Blue is used, however some stations do get the yellow. I'll look around for a pic of yellow being used later.

the wood (http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i6/PerRock/chicago/Station_Textures/Untitled.jpg) is used on most elevated stations, especially in the Loop, the one (linked) without the yellow stripe is for stations with the blue (or yellow) safety tiles. Whereas the the wood with the yellow (http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i6/PerRock/chicago/Station_Textures/platformthinstripe-yellow.jpg) stripe is for older (not yet refurbished) stations without the blue safety tiles.

upon looking at it, I think my wood needs some slight adjustments. It's been quite a while since I made those. I'll probably look over my other un-uploaded textures as well & bring them up-to-date.

and some (with signals) at tower 18. Note the arrows indicating that it is 10mph if the train turns, and 25mph for going straight.

Excellent clarification there, Peter!

As for the station it'll be generic, to be honest!

I guess, if you permit, I can make them as signs and upload or, if you know how, etc make the signs and upload the station signs as a single piece so folks can place them against the station walls -- it's up to you so let me know!

Also, since you clarified what the color textures are far I can now continue creating more stuff, etc ... so let's see what I can make, using your textures!

Right now this project stands as 49 -- I predicted 100 pieces, tho! I'm yet to make the support beams as static objects so folks can have more freedom, etc ...

I have also been searching for construction and warning signs that are use in the track, etc ... but those sites doesn't give this system justice, so if anyone can link me to a site which has such signs please let me know!

@ALL -- Lastly, I should be done by next week with this project -- my treatment plant 40 items are sitting in my files -- so should upload nearly 200 items by next weekend!

Ish

PerRock

I uploaded some other textures as well. Mainly support stuff. I also touched up the wood beams, that being said I'm looking into replacing the wood grain with a better more accurate one, instead of the one I have. The other textures are the two sides for the various support beams, some use the same textures as others, in which case I only made one texture.

What I have made in the way of signs is as follows Black Base:
Small Signs:
Clark/Lake
Jackson (Blue, Red)
Lake
LaSalle (Brown) (Purple, Orange)
Madison (Green, Brown) (Orange, Green, Purple)
Quincy (Brown) (Purple, Orange)
State/Lake (Green, Bown) (Orange, Green, Purple)
Washington (Brown) (Orange, Purple) (Red)

Full Signs:
LaSalle/VanBurren (Brown) (Orange, Purple, Pink)
Library-State/VanBurren (Orange, Purple) (Brown)
Madison/Wells (Black) (Brown)
Randolph (Orange, Purple, Pink) (Brown)
Lake/State (Black)
Washington/Wells (Orange, Purple) (Brown)

Small Blue signs:
Adams/Wabash
Clark/Lake
LaSalle
Madison Wabash
Monroe
State Lake
Washington

Full Blue Signs (some red):
Adams-Wabash
Jackson
Jackson
Monroe

The Frankle Signs
The Quincy Signs

Although it doesn't seem like many, most are all set up the same, so for any needed station I can look up what type it uses and throw together the needed sign easily.
I think for the Full signs the best way would be to make renamable signs for each line, plus the Loop & Shared Service Signs.
The Smaller signs would have to be all done by hand, that being said due to the sheer number of them I would suggest setting up a system similar to Maddy25's US highway sign.
The Fankle & Quincy Signs are unique and so can be made up specifically for their stations.

Ish, they are all on my website, they have been tested without flaws up to TRS2009

Anyway, I have spent over a year on my CTA cars. They now have animated doors, but I have no uploaded that version yet, I still have final touches to add.

@Jeff

Yes, CTA trains get very very crowded at rush hour. The new cars have longitudinal seating, however the concept is not very popular in Chicago, and I would not be surprised if either it changes before more then about a quarter of the 500 car order is built, or changed by CTA in a few years. They are NOT popular with CTA riders at all, never tried them myself, so I can't speak either way

As far as stations go, I am build specific stations on the CTA that are too unique to use a generic station. I do have a few Generic ones built right now, but so far I've spent lots of time building at least one or two route specific stations, if not specific stations for each stop, so that everything looks correct.

A good example is a generic station I used at Belmont and Fullerton, its a basic concrete design. At Skokie, I had to build a very specifically designed station, which could only fit about 2 and a half cars, and was 2 tracks with a small station house.

Yeah, sure -- the stations that I have done have signs which can be re nameable -- Next stop "Will Station"

I'll do the signs as separate items also, so there's more options --- so this is what we would have:

Stations without signs
Stations with signs
The Color scheme signs to represent each line which can be use on any stations!

I believe (and I haven't done the research to completely confirm this) but the various lines do not have different color signs. In the Blue/Red/Green sign style.
The Black style has colored blocks on the ends that say which lines stop at that platform.

There are then two stations with unique sign-age. And a few with variations of the standard sign-age. Such as Rosemont which receives an image of a rose on it's signs.

But the Madison/Wells one looks pretty good. I would suggest making the sign bigger (keep the textures the same size)

peter

Edit:
A bit more about the Red/Blue/Green. Known as the K-D-R signage:

Now, color-coding used as the signs' background would indicate an A station (red), a B station (green), or an AB or All-Stop station (blue). The typeface would be Helvetica medium, found to be the most effective for CTA signs in the Dan Ryan and Kennedy experimental signage. Instead of the previous style of using only capital letters, upper and lower case letters were used to improve readability in addition to the use of the Helvetica font. This series of signs made another interesting change that has remained to this day: whereas the word "and" in a station name had previously been symbolized by an ampersand (such as at "North & Clybourn"), it would now be symbolized by a backslash (such as at "Clark/Lake" or "Adams/Wabash"). (The Dan Ryan signs were also peculiar in that they gave much more play to the long name "Wentworth" than to the numbered street that the station was actually named for, not to mention the fact that the stations were actually nearer to the Dan Ryan Expressway than Wentworth or State Streets.)

The basic forms remained: horizontally long rectangular signs bearing the station's name and address coordinates supplemented by smaller vertically-rectangular symbol signs, posted at the passengers' eye level, displaying the station name, station type and the destination of trains serving that particular platform.

Peter, unless your volunteering to make every single stations sign from every single station for me to use, I think we have to look past KDR signage. just a generic sign is better then what I have now, Which is nothing

PerRock
April 3rd, 2011, 11:40 PM
well I thought we could get away with leaving the address numbers off the black signs. I could make a template sign for each line, plus the loop & dual-service lines. It wouldn't be to much I don't think. If you guys wanted a specific one I could do that as well. (Like Rosemont, with the rose.)

Some of the more unique signs sets would be nice. Most specifically, Quincy.

I've more or less decided to completly replicate the restored Quincy stations as close as I can get it. My current generic "loop" station is close, but not close enough. Quincy is such a wonderful station, it deserves more then me half ***ing it.

I'll be trying to build more loop stations when I get home, I finished all but the ground level Ravenswood stations before I left town. I also need to modify my Kimball station, because on the Snowflake, I realized I really screwed up the design of Kimball terminal, so now I have to fix it.

PS that quote (and a lot more information about the signs) came from here:

Hey Peter,

From your previous post, i just followed the colored-schemes on this page:
http://www.chicago-l.org/stations/index.html

These can still be modified -- so I will make them bigger and thicker for easy placement!

On the link above here I can make those into signs, as many as they have -- it's not a problem, etc LOL -- all I need from you guys is the actual size height/width you would like -- if you're not sure I'll keep the current size then! let me know!

Not living in Chicago I can't just go out and measure one (if there is someone in Chicago reading this & can that would be great!). So I've done the best I can with a bit of Math & some pictures. The best I can come up with is that the Black Station signs (and I would assume the KDR ones are very similar in size) are (all dimensions in feet):
Length: 11.75
Height: 1.5
Length of Colored Portion: 2.125*

*This dimension appears to vary a bit depending on how old the sign is. I took an average between two signs.

While for the majority of the system it would be fictional. I'd love to see CTA signs in the older State/Dearborn Subway signage style.

I'll post up some screenies of any sign I'll do tomorrow -- Tomorrow will be my last post, so you and Will know I will not response or do any content! After I get back I'll finish the system -- I got into it so I got a few more ideas -- maybe, just maybe I'll do the Chicago subways! :)

Thanks for the info -- I got a an idea of what direction I should take now!

Check you spam box the email would have come from Webs.com; due to them having a large number of free sites and probably quite a few with illegal activities their emails get flagged as spam. I did check to see if I could just approve you but it only gives us admins the current user list, not the waiting approval one.

If you can't find the email shoot me a PM with your email & I can try to manually add you.

http://chicagoel.webs.com/

The models are on my forums and can be downloaded by registering on my Website. The 2000's are NOT available for download anywhere, because they are not done yet! Were still working out the kinks

I spoke too soon! I actually had to completely go back a redo all the side texturing on the model, Peter discovered a fatal flaw in the mapping, so I've had to go back and change it all. Also re-mapping a few other things so they can be texture differently then other, and also allowing for a 5th, top secrete paint job (I'm sure someone knows what the 5th paint scheme of the 2000's was)

I know exactly which one you're talking about. Does that set still exist by the way?

I'm sorry that I never finished my 2600 that I was working on, and there's probably no use now, seeing as you've already made one and I still had a long way to go on that. Were you able to use any of the model when you made yours, or did you start completely from scratch?

Not yet. I may see if I can steal your passenger attachment points for my cars, would save me a lot of time and a lot of clicking

And Yes, that partictular set of 2000 series cars is parked outside the Skokie Shops, where they have sat outside since 1994 or so. They have been parked in the same spot since 1999 I think.

The two at the Illinois Railroad museum are going to be painted Alpine White and Mint Green sometime soon, and moved indoors. The future of the 2 at Skokie is still uncertain, though they do not run anymore, and won't be scrapped either. Its just a matter of finding them a home.

last I heard, IRM was trying to get them or parts from them.

If you look at the Stokie shops in Bing's bird's eye view, you can quite easily see them sitting there!

peter

Edit: I was looking on google streetview of the stokie shops, and realized that the cars in question have moved a couple times around the Stokie yard, but in the end not far.

There is nothing on them that the IRM does not have on theirs. Plus, its not like they run, they have been dead for at least 10+ years of sitting.

I haven't decided which scheme I'll work on next, however it'll probably be either the Bicentenial or the Platinum/Black.

Sorry NKP

I got a job working at the Georgetown Loop Railroad. As of right now, I have no Internet (back home in Denver right now) at my house in Silver Plume. I'm working 8 hour days about 6 days a week right now. But honestly, I'm living a dream and having one hell of a good time.

I will finish the L project, don't worry. It just has hit a road block. Since YukonZoom lost his HD, I have no one to finish animating the doors on the cars yet. And since I only have rare access to internet right now, its hard to talk to people about getting the needed help. Once I get my internet sorted out, I will be back, and will try to spend some time getting things finished.

Thing is, working for a railroad, its hard demanding work, and half the time you want to come home and just crash.

Hi All,

Made lots of changes to the pieces, etc ... this is how they look when they're put together!

The beasm will all be statics, and no longer attached to the El Tracks ... the El Tracks are very very tight formation for sharp turns ... for sharper turns, like 2meters spread I will create a template piece, which will be a static object! Noe you will need magicland's 3rd El tracks from the DLS!
