A friend told me about a map site he uses called Nearmaps http://www.nearmap.com/

I think it is oz based, it has more upto date sattlelite photos that google earth of the main cities of Australia.

The photo I was looking at were dated 16 April 2010.
the down side is I do not think it has the feaches of google.

They're not satellite images, they're aerial photographs.

If you read the information on the nearmap site, they actually tell you how often the pohots are updated. The site also covers some regional cities and will extend over time. It will also be available in other countries shortly.

It doesn't try to emulate Google Earth in any shape or form. The photos don't have cloud cover due to the low altitude shots taken by humans. Having said that, someone did complain that his area was blacked out by cloud.

Thanks for the hint. After a quick look it appears that NearMap is associated with the OpenStreetMap project and should adhere to the same protocol. It shouldn't be a problem to add configuration parameters for this service to TransDEM.

Here are the NearMap settings for TransDEM. Save the code fragment below as an .xml file and import in the TransDEM Map Tile Server Settings dialogue.
