Lots_Trains

ITS ALL Trainz

Its totally Trainz nothing from anywhere else. Its just using the features now available in 09/10.

I have used another Dash 9 from Trainz as a reference and have rebuilt 95% of it and pushed the polys up to 65,000 plus for loco and trucks and use 6 levels of LOD's for bothe truck and loco. So it is all Trainz all the tools are available to make such stuff but its just a really steep learning curve.

The wells have had the same treatment except they are a 100% rebuild of someone else's and the poly counts have been pushed way up. but again the lods there are 5 levels are the real secret to performance. Everyone will learn oneday its taken me long enough.

So even though these are rebuilds I'm not comfortable releasing them, I will approach the original Authors and offer them the meshes as I have no wish to configure them for release. These are all configured really weid for my own personal way of running Trainz.

Anyone can do it, its LOD's and baked textures

Don't think I'll muck about with any other schemes for the Dash 9 Wanna alter it for a UP AC44 now. Before moving onto some EMD SD70's and SD90macs Cheers Lots

Hi Guys

Wait sorry but when were those planned on being released?

Well I've emailed and pm'ed the original author of the Dash 9s and offered him the meshes no strings attached, he has not replyed so I suppose hes not interested, so sorry about that can't release them.

The wellcars are the ones from TPR and I've tried to contact the author of those but all his emails are shut down, so there is no joy there so I'm not having much luck there either.

I would like to find some pics of inside the engine bays of the Dash 9 I'd love to have the doors open when they are in the shops so you can see all the internals, but having can't find pics anywhere. When the script is done I also want to put a person that rides on the foot plate for movements in the yard. Does anyone know if they wear hi vis jackets there I know in this country they do, but havn't seen any yard shots over there to know what happens there.

Joe Your route is coming along really well, I highly recommend a DVD called "Triple Track Cajon" an excellent 2hrs of the route you are working on with heaps of BNSF and UP power. Another really really good one if you like big modern power on huge trains is "Mojave Majic 2" Its the Needles Sub from Needles to Barstow, endless Stacks and Pig Trains. Both by Highball Productions. http://www.traintapes.com/

my burning question is not about the trains, but about the tracks... why no ties?

also, these methods are not only limited to TRS2010. all of my site content uses baked textures and LoD and bump mapping etc etc, and it works in TRS04 and up. i think the main thing people miss is that for quality like this it actually takes some effort. nice work you did to the originals. shows what they could have been in the first place.

Hi Ns37

my burning question is not about the trains, but about the tracks... why no ties?

Just a phase I'm going though every once in a while I rebuild my track, I've seen a fair bit of track here with lots of ballast on them and you can't see the sleepers (ties) so I was mucking about with that for a while, and quite liked it, I'm getting a bit sick of it now so I feel a change coming. :hehe:

also, these methods are not only limited to TRS2010. all of my site content uses baked textures and LoD and bump mapping etc etc, and it works in TRS04 and up

Yes very true to think we could have been doing this way back in 06, its really the texture baking that has made the difference. But however I will say though texture size is very important we now have 2048 x 2048 and that makes a huge!!!! difference, I think 06 would have spat the dummy over to many of that size texture, plus vid card memory is much better these days. The Dash 9's have 2 2048 x 2048. It would have worked in 06 if you just wanted to run a couple of loco's. In 2010 I can run a yardfull of these locos more than 30 in shot at once with out killing the frame rate (good lods:hehe: ). The top pic of that group (locos and wagons) the loco is already on the 3rd lod down out of 6 and furthest is probably on the 4th.

i think the main thing people miss is that for quality like this it actually takes some effort.

So very true. The amount of time involved is incredible. Every face has to uv mapped seperately a huge amount of work. Also the way I do the lods is not done as an after though as so many models appear to be. Right from the start I build the 5 or 6 lods required so every part is built in 5 versions whatever is required, combined together, uv mapped so the mapping is exactly the same, seperated and added to then added to the masters. It makes for seemless lods. Lot of work though, thats why I say its just about a total rebuild every part has to be made again in all the lod levels, also new parts made and mistakes corrected.

Really I'm just aspiring to to be as good as Ocemy, I've got a way to go yet.

where did you get those csxt well cars form?

The original wells are from TPR but I have enhanced them. There are no CSXT wells there. The blue ones are BRAN and from the pics I've seen they have Pacer Stacktrain logos on them.

ah ok. a typical US mainline wouldnt have anything like ballast covering the ties unless it was just applied. there are special maintenance vehicles that will come very shortly after and push and contour the ballast, always leaving the ties showing (they are REALLY noisy too).

i have one other question. how wide did you make the shadow plane under the cars/locos there? it seems to be fairly effective.

nobody can be as good as Ocemy. :hehe:

You forget the tracks Lots is referring to is in New Zealand - correct ballasting would make too much sense... While it does have its benefits in yards the amount of ballast we see on mainlines over here is ridiculous * (usually ends of ties sticking out with ballast just covering between the rails), and they wonder why ties rot so fast...

in conclusion those are some nice NZ tracks ya got there lots! :p

Hi Ns37

[i have one other question. how wide did you make the shadow plane under the cars/locos there? it seems to be fairly effective.
/QUOTE]

Yeah they didn't come out to bad, I don't like the built in shadow system, so I run cloudy skies and planes underneath. I actually got the idea off Ocemy except he looks like hes manually done the texture (I'm not that talented) and I've rendered it.

Anyway heres is the process I use took a while to figure it out. Make a 3 partition lenght wise plane at 0 height under the model. make the center partiton the withe of the model. make the outside partions 5 meters each side and make it slightly longer as well. Add all the bits to the model bogies and any other add ons. Bake the texture. Now for the bottom plane move the outside of the planes from 5m into 2.5 on each side (because I use 5m wide double track) other wise it overlaps and looks horrible in the yards. Move the ends in just a fraction to 0.0215 past the a.limxxxx save you mucking about try to get that mesurement. Raise the plane 0.02 so it dosn't interfe with the rails. You also need to brighten the baked texture 20% I find it a bit heavy if left as is. Then make a Mesh Library out of them so they can be used on all vehicles of that type.

I find shrinking the size of the plane afterwards the best way to go and remove the hard edges. Actually you can see on the wellcar ends where I forgot to do that another have to fix job.

Good explanation mate, always wondered why there was so much ballast on tracks over here.

ok thanks Lots, i use a plane on my stuff by it isnt as wide. i just wondered how you came up with the measurement. i figured they would interfere with adjacent tracks or objects if they were too big.

-I'm not sure what you are asking here, but it helps to have the psd and it was pieced together, painted and done by me. I've had it around for a while now but completely redid it to the state that its in now. It wasn't that great before as I was learning PS at that time so it was my first skin. It still needs a couple of changes and maybe some weathering but other than that, just wanted to see what the community thought of it. As I am not much for fictional stuff but I just love the warbonnet paint scheme and this simulator doesn't have enough of it. So instead of asking or waiting I learned a program and did it my self!

Yes, if you buy them. Get them now while they are $5. But if i gave them to you, that would be illegal, otherwise, no.

Actually the 3 figures in the foreground kingstonflyers screen shot are HP Payware for the Marias Plus Pack. But if you look in the top left (backgroundish) you see a man carry a bag. That is a figure from neoklai's website.

Hi Dermmy

I use a I 920 CPU, 295GTX Nividia 1gig GPU , and 6 gig system ram, on Win 7-64 bit ops.

I run TRS 2009~10 at 2560x1600 res at 2000 meter distance setting, I use 30" monitor, its the native res it works best at,after the screenshots are reduced to 1280x800 by Irfanview, then you get what you see here. There is a bit of artifacting from the shrinking.
The original 2560x1600 screentakes look a lot better;)

Cheers

That would be correct. I have the SD-60M, SD70MAC, and ES44DC from World of Trainz and couldn't be happier with them. They are all a lot of fun to use on the various layouts I have.

The only downside I have is that they don't offer repaints of the locomotives.

*sigh* Please stop asking where you can get this and that and what-not. It's honestly irritating after a while when you keep asking the same question over and over on where to get content from (term on here known as "gimme pigs"). Just for a future reference.

But about those locomotives, those are Dash 8-40BW units available at Jointed Rail. The Dash 9's were originally from sporbust, but they are no longer available.
