I want to buy content creater software.
I would like to have a go at making building etc.

Why buy when you can get it for free? There's GMax or Blender for example but almost any 3D software can used providing it can create *.3DS files as you'll need to get it into GMax for the final export to Trainz (note that is a simplified version of the story, a bit of searching here will find you more info).

Yes you'll definitely need Gmax if only for import/export. But note that the 3DS format has been around a loooong time, and different variants of it have evolved. It's possible if not likely that some variants might be incompatible with Gmax's understanding of 3DS. Of course you can model directly in Gmax.

gmax itself is free but you might want to consider buying a book on it so as to learn how to use it. - John

I agree, the G-max Bible is available from online stores for a fair price, and comes with the program on a CD.
