East Kentucky 1 is on the DLS http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/DLS_viewasset.php?AssetID=71516 See the 'Read Me' document packed with the route for links to content not on the DLS.

East Kentucky 2 is coming 'soon'.

EK3, 4 and 5 are but a gleam in their father's eye...

EK is one of my favourite routes for Trainz. Not only is it visually appealing (to me anyway).......it avoids clutter and runs like an absolute dream.

Thanks Andy for getting another EK shot thread going, though I have made a habit of visiting your site at least once a week. Can hardly wait for the EK2 release. Would make a nice Christmas present ;)

From a couple of recent running sessions...

Clouds of diesel smoke everywhere as a pair of B40s working hard against the grade bring their string of empties into Leatherwood Yard while a pair of grimy SDs ease their train under the Leatherwood Tipple:
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/5420/lwood56ut9.jpg

Thirty or so years earlier a 4-unit set of L&N Fs get under way at Beech Fork:
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8535/lwood55atc9.jpg

In the second shot I have used TrainzTuner to tweak the draw distances out a bit - what a difference it makes! And you are right - a train like that has no business whatsoever at Beech Fork. Looks good though :)

Ahhh......TrainzTuner. I too have recently tweaked draw distances with this hand utility, Andy. EK1 was my guinea pig for testing too. I thought I was using a different simulator entirely.

Also noticable in those shots is the doing away with those rotten default levers/switches. ;)

Sorry Simon, but mostly they are still there :(

I had to use something lower on slip switches because the default lever position is so far out it fouls adjacent tracks, so all complex track areas now have local towers and electric levers. Remote areas still have the 'orrible default lever.

My eternal gratitude goes to the first person to suggest a realistic, lo-poly lever suitable for the overall 1950's/60's look of the route which is NOT a part of a left/right handed pair. I can swap a single lever in TO in about thirty seconds, but left/right handed levers would have to be replaced and renamed individually - huge job....

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/Dermmy/East%20Kentucky/ek3_02.jpg

The Davidson Spur departs the EK main at the small community of Lothair, just east of Hazard. The current prototype track arrangement is a simple spur into a single large mine complex which empty trains access by being pushed backwards from Hazard Yard, a trip of about two miles which requires a caboose on the 'front' on account of a couple of road crossings. The Tiger data however shows a more complex arrangement with a second mine complex a mile or so farther downstream accessed by a wye located below a long road bridge. Satellite images clearly show that a mine is (or was) in the area, so I have let my imagination run riot and come up with this complex but visually pleasing arrangement. There were originally three Tipples on the western end of Davidson Spur, Bluegrass #3 and #4 and Starfire, so I have tentatively named the tipple on the eastern end of Davidson Spur Starfire #2. Does anybody know the facts? In keeping with the 'early' time period, a pair of L&N RS3s arrive from Hazard while a pair of S2s wait to get to work on the empties.

I can't believe it's two and a half years since I worked seriously on this project!

I am dividing my time between Clovis3 and EK3, endless desert texturing is getting me down and this is about as far from desert as I can get!! EK3 will be EKTree - I was never happy with the bare hillsides in EK1 and 2, but the computer I started the project on was below minimum spec for TRS04 so I had to go way lo-poly.

EKTree will include a total re-working of the previous versions of the route including replacing a lot of assets with more recent offerings, improving the trackwork and retexturing most of it.

The first area tackled is Blair Fork (on EK2) - it looks better with trees, even if I did have the good weather fog cranked up a bit high....

Magnificent screenies, Andy. These are gold.

I still drive on EK2 with rrmods quality L&N gear.

Also goes to show one doesn't have to grass the bejesus out of a route to make it look it good. I personally think the controlled quantity of the foliage, the seemless blending of used & rusty track, and the point frogs make the route look awesome.

I have no idea Woody - it runs smooth as silk on mine, which is a nice machine but nowhere near over-the-top. In fact i am surprised how smooth it runs. Anyway the important bits of the build machine are:

Intel E6300 Dual Core;
4Gig DDR2 Ram
9800GTX 512 Mb Vid Card

Built in TRS04, screenies from TRS06. It looks like brown sticky stuff in TRS09 even in compatibility mode, but should look sweet in 10 where the issue with Trunda's trees is (I believe) fixed. The upcoming TRS09 SP may fix the issue there, not sure...

Pretty sure Trunda's trees are immune from the overwrite nonsense, if not then this is strictly an 04/06 route. What the heck was wrong with a nice alpha tree or two anyway....

Your tree selection and placement put speedtrees to shame anyway. Plus the MP track (which from what I can see is quite commonly used) has also been obseleted in TS2010. Grrrrrrr!!

I have to say, I live almost on top of where this route is based, the area in general, and this depicts the area so well, that it is worth being payware.

@ ptrainman - definitely for release. My original plan was to include Hazard and the Lotts Creek Branch in EK3, but I think I am going to settle for just finishing the detail upgrade and extending the main line thru Hazard and release that as EK3, then add Lotts Creek as EK4. That will get it out quicker, but still not 'soon'...

From the looks of this, it qualifies as quality payware easily. Better than many I've seen as payware.

Definitely not for screwing up with the disastrous abomination of 2010. You should put a lock on the download that prevents its installation in 2010. Maybe a self destruct mechanism of some sort - for 2010, not your route.

06 Rulez - lol :)

Another one featuring RRMods new SW1200 on an unlikely Conrail main line freight. I have doubled the main line between Dent and the Eastern portals to simplify AI portal operations on the semi-random AI sessions I prefer. Whether or not the entire route gets doubled is still an open question, but I think double track is going to win out over proto realism. Anybody offended by the lapse from prototype fidelity can easily enough single the track again....

... Yes, it's on the wrong track. Doh!

The realistic grades of your route, demonstrate how real RR's go up, and down humps and bumps of track gradients...they are not simply a 1.25% grade for 11 miles long...something I had overlooked on my Horseshoe Curve route.

I can't express how excited I am about the upgrade to this route. I know the original was from a long time ago, and much has changed. After seeing your Clovis work, I secretly wished you would model something further East. You are definitely capturing the feel of the area. I'll try to shut up about this one until I have something more relevant to say. I just really look forward to it.

Dermmy, where did you get those trees?

Great, aren't they! They are by Trunda and you can get 'em here (http://www.greenery.name/mstsgcz/mstsgd.htm?trainz,1) - you want all 3 tree packs, plus the grass and shrubs.

I really love this upgrade to the old route. East Kentucky was about the first thing I did in Trainz and even leaving out the lack of trees (forced on me by an ancient computer) a lot of it was pretty bad. Compare the eastern end of Dent Yard on...

I am trying for a vaguely 1950's - 60's look although I am not sweating it too much. There are 1950's style truck-dump loadouts, but the signals are JR Safetran on the main cause they look fantastic and work really well and the grade crossings have boom gates because I can't find anything for TRS04 that I like better than Weevil's old ProXings. And there aren't enough 'early' cars and trucks...

So it has an overall 'early' look, but there are anachronisms a-plenty. You can run just about anything you like on it...

How's the route coming along Andy?

It's been at a standstill last couple of weeks while I tried to come to terms with where a committed TRS2004 routebuilder stood with Auran's new slash-and-burn attitude, but I am pleased to say I just tonight discovered that the route imports and runs in TS2010-SP2 with much more success than it did in SP1. The following screenies are from 10/2....

http://checkrail.com/images/Trainz/ek3/ek3_181.jpg

http://checkrail.com/images/Trainz/ek3/ek3_182.jpg

http://checkrail.com/images/Trainz/ek3/ek3_178.jpg

http://checkrail.com/images/Trainz/ek3/ek3_179.jpg

... and while I am not entirely happy they are WAY better than screenies from 09 or 10/1 - so it's back-to-business with both EK3 and Clovis3.

Andy :) Let me correct myself... Ahem...
I was referring to the truss span (Warren Through-Truss 124017:25030:1 ) that I consider part of that bridge kit that is always in my shots. The truss just doesn't look right to me when trying to double it up. I have doubled the girders in several routes. Not that I expected anyone to build it, just a brain fart.

Impressive work. I've been through there at least once in my life and I must admit that it's very accurate in terms of well...everything. The track seems to just come alive in your screen shots as a CSX freight appears in it. I think CSX runs an office car special along that line with EMD F40PH passenger diesel locomotives along the main line. I have one question, though. Isn't that former Louisville and Nashville trackage or did that belong to the Southern Railway? But, back to what I was saying, when I wen to the line, I was able to catch as many as 6 CSX trains in one day. Don't ask me why, I don't really know why I was so lucky. I enjoy watching this great route get better and better and I can't wait to download this great freight route. I will finally be able to drive trains along a railroad line, where I have been before in my younger years.
Keep up the great work,
PereMarquette1225fan
P.S. If only Louisville and Nashville 152 was steaming up, she could possibly take an excursion along the line with a cut of ex-L&N steel heavyweight passenger cars with an Amtrak P42 on the rear to pull the 152 back. I forgot a question I wanted to ask ya, so I'll just put it down here. Does Amtrak serve the main line with intercity passenger service and if not there, how far is the nearest Amtrak service? Anyway, at least the route is swell and it makes me get my railroad appetite bigger and bigger for such an amazing route.
Keep up the good work,
PereMarquette1225fan

I have been wondering if you are using MP Wood-Josefpav-HP Trainz ?
I too use MP Rusty which I am lead to believe is unaffected in TS2010 ?

Dermmy
May 2nd, 2010, 07:25 AM
Thanks for the link. I have my own 'TRS10-Friendly' copy of MP-Wood, but since Phil already has a version on the DLS I will swap the original MP-Wood out in favour of his copy, saves cluttering the DLS with different versions of identical assets. MP-Rusty is unaffected in TS10.

At the risk of wandering off-topic, IMHO overwriting one of the most-used tracks in Trainz is just about the silliest thing that Auran/N3V/whoever have ever done...

Nice shot. It looks very prototypical. It reminds me of a time, I got the chance to ride a coal train with a CSX Transportation crew. It was in 1990, and our lead locomotive was an ex-Chessie System SD40-2 with "B&O" lettering above its number. I had photographs of the run, but my girlfriend by mistake, threw them out.

start trainz and when you get to the main menu page, click "main menu" at the top left, then click on "options". About 3/4 of the way down you will see "enable compatibility mode for older content". Put a check beside that. Now close trainz and reopen.

Hi rmhoman - I see you are new - please be aware that recent screenies are of the unreleased EK3 project which is still a work-in-progress. The route available from checkrail.com is EK2 which is 'not quite' the same thing! Look back to the start of this thread for earlier screenshots of the available version. For example the Cab view approaching Jeff Yard off the Carrs Fork Branch looks like this in EK3,

Nice pictures, bro. Those remind me of yet another trip, I took up there. It was 1979, and I rode in the cab of a Louisville & Nashville Railroad Electro Motive Division F-7A unit and the ride was fun. The crew were friendly, and they stopped the train and for 20 minutes, we had lunch, right beside the train. The conductor in the caboose had lunch with us. But alas, like my trip with CSX my girlfriend threw out the pictures and that was back in 1995. *Mutters* Women who hate trains.

Thanks bro. That was just the consist we had. We were on our way up to pick up a cut of coal cars and then we were to proceed back down the line. When we returned to the main we saw three American Locomotive Company "U-boats" leading a freight with an old Norfolk & Western Railway boxcar with Wabash Railroad reporting marks. I can't remember which models the "U-boats" were, but I think they were U30Cs.

Great shots and when this is released it will be a very popular route for many. TS2010 upgraded with bump content and 3d vegatation (got some new Ultratreez in progress with low gpu useage and closely representing Trundra Trees ) will make this route unbelievably real.

I wait with anticipation.

I am looking forward to getting this for TS2010! Will it be the complete 3 parts, or still separated into independent sections? Either way, I'll be one of the first to DLoad this one!

Andy, above is a link to two very close screenshots of a WIP. At a dstance the foilage is very small to represent Trundra trees but in 3D.

Keep in mind actual duplication is not possible at this time, but I have a few test techniques I have in mind to really come close to Trundra trees making my upcoming content in high demand and used frequently.

The unpopular aspect and might dissapoint you is that the new UltraTreez at low triangle/less gpu strain/improved foilage and scaling will be Payware. If purchases support this very difficult time consuming content, every so often a freeware release.

Tell me, is this based on the route L&N used to run between Corbin, Kentucky and Knoxville, Tennessee? If so, I'm even more interested.

It looks fantastic Andy, you have such a hand for scenery. I appreciate how you release these for free, I know how much work a layout takes, it is very commendable of you to release these fine pieces for free!

Tell me, is this based on the route L&N used to run between Corbin, Kentucky and Knoxville, Tennessee?

Nope - that was the Cumberland Valley Division. The East Kentucky Division was Winchester to Deane. It was a stub-end division in L&N days. CSX joined the L&N tracks to ex-C&O tracks at Deane to make it a through route. L&N and C&O actually served the same mine at Deane, but there was no connection...

CSX had a handful of F units. Back in the late 80s-early 90s, these units hauled freight across southern track, in places such as EASTERN KENTUCKY :p . Anyway, once CSX got bigger and better units, the F units were taken out of service. Some were painted in YN2, and some were leased to other railroads such as MARC. So, to answer your question, yes, CSX had F units.

Dermmy,

This route looks incredible. Calling it a masterpiece would only be hitting the tip of the iceberg. Well done.

Same here. I deleted 2010 off my PC long ago. A complete waste of time and disc space. I'm waiting for this layout, then I'm done. I have all the good ones from 2006, and then I'm sticking with those. No more Trainz versions for me.

^ IMHO TS2010 is the best version EVER. I have been running my Ozark Valley route (designed for TS2010 <kuid:101046:1102>) for two months now and absolutely no crashes, Fatal Errors, stuttering, etc. that I get with TRS2006. I have no use for any versions below TS2010 now. I'm sticking with this newest and best version of TRAINZ ever.

In My Humble Opinion, of course.

I have absolutely no idea what the release date will be, not even a wild guess. It is taking waaaayyyyyyy longer than I thought it would.

Bad news for some, but good news for others is that I am pretty certain that EK3 will be a TS2010 route. I have recently moved construction out of 04 and into the newer version. To those who don't have 10 yet, or who have tried it and quit, my apologies. I just find that the route runs and looks WAY better in 10 and I am rapidly coming to terms with the issues I had with the 2010 Surveyor content search mechanisms. The route never ran well in 04, I always ran it in 06 but even there it was becoming something of a slide-show. In TS2010 it runs with more than acceptable framerates, but best of all even when the rates are low it is still smooth with very little (if any) stuttering. On the 'Surveyor' side, most of the background trees are copy/pasted in largish blocks and as the size of the route files increase the pasting lag in 04 Surveyor was getting out of hand. In 10 the 'Paste' function is instant.

To those who have tried 10 and quit I would humbly point out that NOBODY canned 2010 harder than I did when it first appeared. I thought it sucked. With perseverance I am quite happy to admit I was wrong - dead wrong.

Hang in, it's worth it...

While drooling over this route, and talk of perseverance with 2010 ... what am I going to do with this absolutely huge 65 Gb TRS2006 "local" file I have been amassing, and its contents. Can the TRS2006 local file be sent dirrectly into 10, or copy and paste just the contents of a TRS2006 "local" file into 10 ? How bout a gigantic 65 Gb CDP ?

Man your route(s) are great ! Can't wait till I get into 10 also.

EK3 will include in a single route everything that was in EK1 and EK2. In addition it includes an extension to the west which will include at least the yard at Hazard Ky plus enough westbound track to get a pair of portals in. Originally I was going to also include the Lotts Creek Branch, but I am honestly getting sick of trees so Lotts Creek might have to wait till EK4...

Yea, I'm feelin your pain...it's not just trees, it's also trackside brush...

Grogstop65, "The Painter," was good at this(however he could not come to grips with "attaching" spline points to the baseboard. This was his 'final' show-stopping 'Achilles Heal.')...however, several copy his 'technique.'

I have almost a thousand miles of solitary track-laying, awaiting accomplishment with this approach...alone, yes, but not in Auran Trainz Railroad Simulator Two-Thousand-4.

EKv1, EKv2, are Legacy Routes....you are now, so aware & in the present. Anything forward, is current!

No one has a legit reason for staying with Legacy software, that want to enjoy what NeverFail has progressed, that Planet Auran began, period!(Can you tell, I am a perfectionist?)

 ...however, "keeping it simple," is not an option today...!

We have social-networking...Facebook, YouTube, anything running JavaScript, the necessary software including payware Internet Security is mandated.

You know that every computer you see post on the TS2010 Forums is now obsolete...you get-in where you fit-in...

I only have TRS2004, TRS2006 installed for reference to past assets to update for TS2009-TS2010.

Use the Compatibility Programs for these new versions of the games(I posted this months ago in the Software Forum).

You maybe surprised at what just needs to be done...we are not using X486 anymore!

Most of the route to date was done in 04, therefor runs OK in 06. It is not impossible (though no promises!) that I might work out a way to get an abbreviated version of the route out for the earlier versions. Again - no promises - but it definitely won't happen till some time after after the main release...
