View Full Version : Things You Can And Cannot Do While DSL Is Down.

[er...DLS that is]
Obviously you can't download anything at present, so take the opportunity to optimize your downloads once it's back up. Make use of your Shopping Cart. You can still browse and search for assets, so find the ones you need immediately and queue them into your Cart, then when the DLS gets rolling you can select Download All and save yourself extensive search time. I can hear some of you hollering that if everyone did this, the downloads would slow to crawl and maybe even stop again. Actually, this may save bandwidth by cutting down the number of searches required for each member, and regardless, people are going to flood the server with download requests anyway. Hopefully, the DLS will be up soon, but taking a phrase from a famous book, Don't Panic!

Another suggestion is to visit third party sites. Many great items can be downloaded for free.

This may make me sound cranky, but get over it. The DLS is down, we know. We don't need 30 or more threads telling us about it and complaining. No offense, but I'm getting a little tired of this.

I wouldn't advise that in CMP. If you close CMP with items in the download helper it tends to cause problems.

Mike.

Sorry if I'm complaining, but I tend to get cranky myself when I can't use something I paid for.

"I've got an idea. How about running some trains?"

Amen.

You don't know how right you are. So many of us get caught up in constantly searching and aquiring new material that we lose track of why many of us got into Trianz.

I've been in a route-building rut for the last year, I get some track laid and delete the route. Yesterday, for the first time in months I ran a train, just one, on part of HP's Marias Pass. It was the best feeling ever, and I forgot how good it felt just watching the engines and frieght cars roll on by.

Of course it is. The problem lies in routes and assets that depend on other assets to work properly, and are not included. Anyway, I am running Trainz and here's an example of one my runs.

Use search with my name and Threads started by User, I have one for tutorials, or go to one of the Trainz sites for links.

When using links, don't just look for content, look around for more links on those sites and follow them. Spend a day just browsing sites, bookmarking ones you want to come back to for some reason.

www.trainzstation.com (http://www.trainzstation.com) is where SPORBUST keeps his fabulous Western railroad diesels (he's currently having a problem with the availability of some due to assets he needs off the DLS).

www.virtual-motive-division.com (http://www.virtual-motive-division.com) has some wonderful freeware products in addition to their fabulous payware locos.

www.steammachine.com (http://www.steammachine.com) is home to Slugsmasher, Ben Neal, Prowler, and Charlie, and is a mecca for narrowgague and steam in general.

http://trainzone.co.nz/, in addition to the Murchison layouts (highly recommended, but payware), Sirgibby and a couple others have put together a large narrowgague collection, focusing on the logging industry.

Hi,

Yes, the DLS can be contacted...but will not permit downloads...just tried and got this message:

Contacting download site...please wait.
Download Link unavailable.
Reason:
The maximum number of connections to our download server has been reached, this page will try to reconnect in 30 seconds

Suggest you try dl'ing something and see what you get...then let us know.

Thanks,

Did seem kind of pointless for Auran to put up a whole flock of new stuff on the DLS today but leave it so no one can download it. Now it is the weekend so I presume it will be Monday before anything further is done.

I'm trying to figure out what's taking so long to fix. If it's hardware it should have been fixed by now, software problems might take some more time but still........

Great_Lakes

The only thing that is frustrating me is the lack of communication on their part. While I am sympathetic to them in that they are working on it and doing the best they can do and in a timely manner, most businesses (ie) utility companies, banks and others would say what the problem is and give an estimated time on when things should be up and running again.

I don't want to come across as a troll so please don't interpret this comment as flaming; all I am saying is it is usually good customer service relations, giving your customers a bit more information and communications concerning a problem especially when a main component of your business is negatively effected for extended period of time.

robbiehanson
January 11th, 2008, 03:12 PM
@Jfarrer: I'm going to assume it's hardware, as software could make that error but would be totally corrupted. If it was software, it would be nearly impossible to recover anything from the DLS, i.e. everything would be lost. If it does happen to be software, I'd be willing to volunteer my time into fixing it for Auran...but that will unfortunately never happen. Even worse, it's now the weekend(Saturday) in Australia, so it'll be at least until Sunday evening(for us Americans). Argh, the suspense is killing me....

The DLS server with the content data base is located in Texas...recall hearing that it may be in or around Dallas. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on that location....thanks

Aidan has provided us with information that the problem is being fixed....but no estimate of a date of completion.

Have fun,

We don't need to know the details, and if the repair team doesn't know when it will be fixed, they can't tell us anyway. Like someone once said, It Ain't Like Nothing Yer Can Fix Wi' A Hammer and Nail'.

If you are a content creator, you could consider uploading old or new content to the TrainzProRoutes Download Depot. That would provide you with storage redundancy in case something like this should happen again.
Just a suggestion.

I have taken the time to make some decent back-up archives. Some content archived by creator and my favorite routes with dependencies included ( thank to Mike10 for explaining how to do that ). Browsing through all those GB's of content I realized I don't miss the DLS at all at the moment. So much content already on the HD to use :D

If you are a content creator

;) Just it's curious to highlight the fact that humble content creators and contributors to the DS (gratis et amore) are the ones who are not complaining about. Just a Saturday evening remark! That's the spice of life! :hehe:

The TPR Depot option which Ed reminds of is an interesting alternative way of sending/getting stuff (which I also pioneered with some of my humble assets). Of course, visiting IBTZ Download (http://www.ibertrainz.eu/noticias/) Sites (http://web.ibertrainz.eu/secciones/descargas.html) (for our content) is another way of learning Spanish :hehe:! And paying a visit to other original source websites is a nice way of thanking creators for their effort to make Trainz a more playable enjoyment! Even though you have to do some linguistical effort yourself. Do ut des!

Muchos gracias senor Alberte...and Eduardo of course.....:hehe:

I would have thought that downtime on the DLS gives everyone plenty of time to do some CMP housekeeping, to clone files and layouts, back-up locomotives and rolling stock, archive stuff and burn CD's with muchos gigabytes of assets, change hornsounds and engine configurations on locos that you wanted to do months ago but couldn't find the time, visit 3rd Party websites such as TPR and IBTZ, my God, is there any time left for the DLS this weekend, even if it was working.....:hehe:

Hi Alberte
Yes a very nice site and some nice things to download but my Spanish is not up to finding any contact email on there for the problem :
The requested URL /web/descargas/paquete_17_palmeras.cdp was not found on this server.
So I'll mention it here !
PS.Any chance that some of those routes would be redone for TRS2004 ?

Sorry Auran, but even I can set up a more reliable web server than this!

Depending on the outcome of the meetings this month, between Auran, its creditors and the liquidator, you might get the opportunity.

Australia has some very tough insolvency laws, including jail for directors who knowingly trade whilst insolvent, and the last time I looked, in situations like this, the creditors have the whip hand, and its their decision whether to wind up a company or not.

So, rather than keep on about when the DLS will be back, hold your breath and wait and see if it will be back.

After a week, I suspect there is more involved here, than a server malfunction. Either that, or Planet Internet Services Inc, needs a kick in the ass.
