View Full Version : Trivia: Fence posts

Walking through Melton Country park along the disused rail line I noticed that though it has been closed for at least 50yrs the wooden fence posts are rock solid.
Any idea what they are made of?

Does it look like the bottoms were soaked in creosote? It may be hard to see after 50 years. If not, possibly Western Red Cedar. It can last forever in acidic or neutral soils, not so much in alkaline soils. And I am assuming they filled the holes with concrete?

Thanks for the reply, I shall dig a bit deeper so to speak on the next visit. They certainly built things on a grand scale in the 19th century, the stations, even in the villages are top class and still in use as homes. The embankment are still solid even though built by hand. The same goes for the bridges!
