View Full Version : Shadows and performance... Is it caused by shadows on all objects too far too see?

It appears that the shadows are causing a performance issue for many folks. TANE needs the ability to draw objects in the far distance without shadows... Is there a possibility of adding this kind of feature?


Don't get us wrong. We love the shadows and lighting, but why draw shadows on stuff that's out at the maximum distance level set?

Would it be possible to limit shadows closer to the camera (eye view) and eliminate them at the furthest distance?

There are always trade-offs between visuals and performance, but to the best of my knowledge this isn't an area where we'd see any substantial performance improvements. Obviously it depends on what you mean by "stuff that's out at the maximum distance level" - if you're talking about halving the distance or more, then it might have some impact. But just nudging a few percent off the low-LOD areas is unlikely to have any noticeable impact. Keep in mind that everything at distance is (hopefully) at a low LOD and doesn't have a great deal of rendering cost.
