View Full Version : Why do objects blur the closer you get to them?

I've been noticing this anomaly when zooming in for screenshots to be used as thumbnail images.

If you look at the small grey propane tank, it's very fuzzy at close range but gets sharper at a few metres away. This makes it impossible to discern fine detail in both texture and geometry when up close. It's the direct opposite of what I'd expect.

I notice the same effect in the TANE CM's asset previewer, but not in the AssetX viewer where it remains sharp.

My PC uses a GTX980Ti card and I have Trainz set to 8x antialiasing in the game and in the Nvidia control panel. Other in-game video conditions are shown below;

Is this normal for TANE (or even other versions)?

Does anyone else see this effect? If not, can you suggest what I can do to make it sharper close up?

This is a depth-of-field post-processing effect; it's deliberate. If you don't like it, turn down your Post-Processing settings, or you can manually customise them on a per-run basis.

Hey thanks Chris. Not really knowing what post processing is, I assumed high = better. I'm surprised it's not.

Higher is better in our opinion. You're more than welcome to have a different opinion.

Just tried Post Processing = Low. It's way better (on my system at least). The objects are now sharply focused close up and become less focused in a very gradual and natural-looking way as distance increases. This setting probably saves a few system resources too, a bonus.
