Heres some pics of my 3ft guage route somewhere in the deserts of America.

My first shot is of "Old Timer", an early American 4-4-0 haulling a large machinery load crossing one of the many trestles.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7753/screen014pc8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The second pic is of the same train waiting to cross a passenger in the loop at one of the stations on the line.

Heres a little pick of a 2ft narrow gauge route I've just started. The only thing is for some reason the loverly ballast textures and some of the grass has gone very white and i don't know why. It almost looks like it's been snowing. I don't suppose anyone might know why it's gone a funny color?:(

To add to the collection, some early stage pictures of the Ffestinog line, (an update to Windowmakers line).

The first pic is of "Welsh Pony" & "Prince" storming out of Boston Lodge works heading towards the station.
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/357/screen001be3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)The next couple of pics are from my new Penrhyn site where the station will go in. This shot is looking towards Blaenau Ffestiniog. (only 1 hours work there)
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/7940/screen005db5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This shot is looking in the oposite direction from the first shot still looking at Penrhyn.

The last shot is still looking the same way but closer to the station site.

Hey,
@Sparky123456, Thankyou for the criticism.:) I like when people see things like that that i havn't noticed. But somehow i think your refering to the section of Boston Lodge when the railway swings round past the Boston Lodge works as it leaves "The Cob". This spot.

Well after asking many questions, I've decided to give back to this thread with a screenie of a route I'm working on.

The basics:
Its in 760mm European setting (Central Europe, Germany, Czech Republic et.al.)
Most of the trains and rolling stock can be found via the links kindly provided by Paulzmay on Page 2. (Thanks!).
This Route is NOWHERE near completion save for what you see in the picture. I will provide more screens when I feel the section I want to show off is complete enough without all you guys vomiting ;)

Out of interest kevmt why don't you upload to the DLS?

Most of my models are made with the sole purpose of publicising the relevant railways and, basically, to get people to visit their websites. Putting stuff on the DLS would not have this effect.

The Talyllyn are still happy to do this but, lately, the Ffestiniog (with a change of webmaster) have lost interest in trainsims and removed them from there updated site. (the old download page is still there, though). I was given the impression last August (by the GM), that the models would reappear on the new site but this has not happened and I now don't expect them to reappear. I have to admit I am dissapointed with this outcome, as I had spent many (literally thousands of) hours doing these models for the Ffestiniog at their request!

I have one, maybe two unreleased Ffestiniog models. If I do release them, then they will appear on UKTrainsim.

Since there has been so much talk about the ffestiniog, i thought it was time to stir it some more.

Recently i was thinking that the sections that weren't stations needed some re-furbishment. So here we are.

Some backpackers wait for Penrhyn lady Blanche to cross the trail crossing just out of Tan-Y-Bwlch.
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/3830/Ffestiniogset1-1.jpg

An overview of Lyn Mair. The railway can be seen in distance and there seems to be snow on the mountain peaks.
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/3830/Ffestiniogset1-3.jpg

Blanche whistles just as she is about to plunge into the dark confines of the tight Garnedd tunnel.
Note: this tunnel was custom built by me:D.

That looks really impressive 3830! I take it from your comment that you're just updating widowmaker's FR route, or did you start from scratch? (either way it looks yummy atm!)

It's a shame about the FR website not taking an interest in having your models there any more Kevin, silly as well really because as you say it's good publicity - it's the way I first discovered and fell in love with the FR.

This ist just my first try on narrow-gauge, these days it´s not more than a 4-baseboard testmap, but it will be a complete NG-route one day (1000mm and 750/760mm as well, the plan is to build the map with this in mind and in the end just change the tracks from 1000mm to 750/760mm with TO :D )

I'm here at work, and can't remember all the exact specs right now. But, it's a Dell E510. Has an AMD Athlon running over 2GHz, 1GB RAM, nVidia 7300LE w/ 512MB RAM. The video card is ok. I run an average of 20-24 fps in my heavily populated areas even with three of my high poly locos and lots of rolling stock. That's in DirectX mode. OpenGL sucks on it though (~9fps) I will be upgrading the video card to at least a 7600GT, and I want another GB of RAM. But, I'm super happy with it. I'm able to work on my RGS route again because the computer doesn't clunk and sputter every time I move the compass ;)

If you mean the valve gear then I'm guessing that it had to do with efficiency in the interleave of the valve gear. Maybe putting things on the outside was more accurate for a loco that had to do many wheel revolutions for so little speed. But I'm no expert.

But just like Zapperjet, I myself am no expert so I could be wrong.

that actually makes sense... so that the engine wouldnt de-rail or anything while going around a turn or something, or just falling over in general. I guess that the bigger boiler would be needed to produce more power, and in turn needed a bigger frame, which would lead to the wheels being too big for the track, so an outside frame was used instead to accommodate the extra weight... this is my hyopthesis..

I read somewhere that these locos (K-27 and K-36 and such) are just as powerful as British steam locos (possibly mainline) when they (K-27 and K-36 and such) were built!

just out of interest why were most DRG, ad DRG&W locomotives outside framed, valved thingys... i like the inside frame ones alot like RGS#20 they "look" better, was there a preformance difference or something?

According to information I found, the main reason for the outside frame was to allow the boiler to be lower and in turn lower the center of gravity on the train so as to force the engine to remain firmly on the track and keep better traction. size of the boiler didn't seem like a priority over good traction and stability on the small track.

February 18th, 2007, 11:18 AM
If your wondering why certain locomotives were outside instead of inside frame (such as the K-27 or K-36), it was because that by placing the locomotive frame on the outer end of the axles of narrow guage locomotives allows for a lager boiler/firebox to be place on the frame without making the locomotive top heavy. But just like Zapperjet, I myself am no expert so I could be wrong.

thats why they did it, consider the durango and silverton, a top heavy loco couldfall down a cliff pulling all the pasingers with it, a lower center of grav helped that, allso, cuz im bored, on the DRGW K stood for mikado and the number for horse power

They do indeed look good. I know this is nitpicking, but the distance between Rhiw Goch and Cei Mawr is a bit larger than you have modelled :p

i'm not entirely sure on the forest just before Rhiw Goch (first pic), I think it's a few trees nearer the track, there may be forestry a bit further back. I'm not sure that Cei Mawr passes over a river/stream either...never really looked though to be honest. There should be a few more trees at the bottom of the embankment though.

As I say it looks good :) Pretty much as good as we can get with this sims limits! Would you like a model of the new signal box at Rhiw Goch making? If so I'll get round to it in a week or two.

I found a video on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yT-xqTcNZA
where a loco starts from Rhiw Goch and it takes bout 30 seconds - a minute to get from the loop to Cei Mawr. It takes around the same time in my one, but it probably is shorter because i'm using Widowmakers base and i don't know how long things are.

The video clip you gave the link to, it takes 1 minute 9 seconds to reach the start of Cei Mawr, so without the stop, I'd say about 40 seconds, so your version really isnt that far off :).

No, It's Bulldog.
Description of Episode via Wikipedia:
One morning, Percy is impatient. He wants to go out and show off his new coat of paint, but Thomas warns him off, saying that Duke will not be there to save him should he get into trouble. Toby asks what happened, and so Thomas tells the story...
Falcon had been given a new coat of paint, and the day after, the Manager tells him he is to learn the mountain road, with Duke. Falcon is miffed - having the 'old fusspot' in front will block his view. Duke tells him not to worry about the view, but to look at the track. As they come out of a tunnel, so it happens.
Falcon derails, and is very close to falling off the side of the cliff. Fortunately, Duke reverses hard, and is able to keep Falcon steady, even as he runs low on water - the passengers and crew get more from a cottage on the side of the track. Eventually, Duke hauls Falcon back onto the rails, and they can finish their journey. Falcon thanks Duke, and asks why he'd saved him after all the rude things he'd said. Duke replies, "Well you'd just had a new coat of paint. It'd be a shame if you rolled down the hill and ruined it."

I think I won this one!

teddytoot, even in Wilbert's books, Falcon and Stuart were blue and green, and both changed to red when they went to the Skarloey Railway. Plus, the railway that Bulldog takes place at is not the Skarloey Railway, it's the (now lifted) Midland Sodor Railway.

Correction: The Skarloey Railway is actually 2' 3" (27"), just like the Talyllyn Railway. hbl stated that the Skarloey Railway is a twin to the Talyllyn Railway. All the narrow gauge railways on Sodor are 27 inches, (except the Culdee Fell Mountain Railway which is 2' 7 1/2", and also does not include the Arlesdale Railway, as it's miniature gauge).

someone said something about the MSR? (mid sodor/ midland sodor railway) Well do i have a surprise for you:D... For a while Benk87 and I have been working on a Trainz version of the MSR (benk did the tracklaying which is very very accurate to the book) and I'm doing the scenery. Unfortunately it has come to be passed by on other routes like my Rhieds Railway V2, and The Aberglassylnn Light Railway. I do have invisible track where the "bulldog" story takes place, as well as some areas never mentioned in the books (ex: the docks where the little engines exchanged passengers with the mainland) The MSR was supposed to be similar to the Ffestiniog Railway but at a gauge of 2'3" (like the Talyllyn) hbl is planning on making the Skarloey Railway (Someone has made one already but I for got who...) and I asked if he could make it so that the two could be joined at one point or another. As a little fact: contrary to the TV show the SR (skarloey) is not built over the MSR, the Arlesdale Railway IS built over the old MSR line, so it is odd that the show never introduced us to the "little railway" instead choosing to use the SR instead....:confused:

I really hate to be picky but....
Peter Sam & Edward Thomas are very different from Stanhope. Stanhope has a different valve arrangement and is a little longer than ET, but seeing as we are all patiently waiting for a SH and ET (Sir Haydn and Edward Thomas) its is fine. I've been secretly running Stanhope with the TR passenger cars just because I miss ET...

Whhy don't you allow reskins?

its very complicated with the thomas the tank engine ones. A great deal of licensing has to be done before you or anyone else makes a copy of a copyrighted thing. Money is usually involved. If you wonder why MSTnoodle hasnt made the rest of the Skarloey Railway stuff, its probably because of that. He was supposed to make Sakrloey, Proteus, and possibly mighty mac, but here lies the copyright. anything that looks really like these entities could be brought up in court as violating the copyright:( which is stupid if you ask me...

in that shot that car is the WHR buffet car, that I re-skinned into NWNGR colors (using Moel Tryfan's color palette) I was being careless (and angry, because I was trying to get the extra wheel to go away) and accidentally put that coach in the picture. so 3830, anything new on the FR? I was thinking that eventually we could do a team effort and make the Welsh Highland, or Penrhyn.

To anyone who might know; what happened to the Penrhyn Railway, that it just up and left its engines on a siding? I know that the FR bought Blanche and Linda, but Stanhope, Lilla, and the others were just left there? to rot!?!?!
If only I had been 17 back then, I would have asked for one for my birthday:D maybe I'll donate money to the Penrhyn for my birthday this year (I plan to live in Wales one day, or go there for the summer:D) Volunteering there would be a nice change from school; maybe before college I'll go and live in Wales for a year. Just wondering...

Sparky123456
March 14th, 2007, 01:08 PM
The Penrhynduedraeth quarry railway closed pretty much as soon as the quarry did, as there was then no need for the trains to run any more. It would probably have started o slow down once slate traffic from Porthmadog stopped.

The FR did buy the sister locos, I think they also bought Charles, though that may have been at a later date, and it was then passed to a preservation group. Lilla was bought by the Bala Lake railway I think, as were a few other hunslets. Many were left for at least a few years before being recued...or left to rot(I don't actually know how many, if any, were left to rot) However some of this information is probably wrong.

Anywho, volunteering on the FR is great fun. There's a great social life. If you're under 16 you are very much restricted as to what you can do. if you're 14+ you can do 'kids training week' in summer, which is how I started volunteering. You basically do alot of small tasks that help the railway in general, such as electrical work, and genral repairs on buildings etc. You can't work on locos until you're at least 16. You can work on buffet (serving snacks etc on the train) from 14 too I think.

Cheers

I think Charles was bought by someone else, as it is up in Canada somewhere. There are also some quarry hunslets here in the USA some where. I intend to find them, perhaps. What I really want to do is find a Hunslet like Britomart, and restore and run it. Thats what I'd really like to do. I wonder if there are some just sitting in sheds rusting away up in Wales. or if someone would sell one to me, how much could a rusting, non-used engine cost? I know that the Talyllyn bought ET and SH for £50 a piece or something like that. Weren't Linda and Blanche bought for around that (I thought £75 or something) but back then that was alot of money wasnt it. I wonder... how hard could it be to find one..

Charles is owned by and on display at the Penrhyn Castle Museum (Nprth Wales):-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrhyn_Castle_Railway_Museum

I would be very surprised if there are any undiscoverd Hunslets left. To buy one and restore it to working condition would cost a small (probably large) fortune!

The days of buying locos for £50-75 have sadly long gone.

If you're really interested, you can buy a brand new quarry hunslet for around £100,000. (Or something like that) :D

On the subject of the Penrhyn Quarry: Does anyone have an idea of what liver Lady Madcap might have been in? My guess is a deep red or maroon color like the other hunslets.

Lady Madcap is near finished. Just needs a proper coat of paint and a script.

I lived in aberystwyth, wales for five years and on various days off did a lot of poking around in various disused quarry's and slate mines. I never found any locos although i did find some interesting bits of machinery , a few rusty old boilers of various types and what was left of some well rusted rolling stock.
I like to think however that out there somewhere there is a rusty old Hunslet sitting in a long forgotten shed hidden in lots of overgrown undergrowth.

there has to be some kind of engine buried somewhere, waiting to be found, but I presume that restoring it would cost around the same as buying a new one. but what if you were to find one, who would you buy it from? I presume the owner of the railway (or former railway), or land, correct? they couldn't be too expensive, I mean they are practically piles of metal, just sitting around causing waste. They would need some TLC, and love:) (and a new coat of paint among other things)

I'm afraid if you go to Wales that your probably not going to find one laying around, and if you did, it's highly unlikely that you could restore it. Unless you had someone to do it for you, you'd need a large lathe and welding equipment. You'd need the schematics for the original locomotive class, and you'd have to pay for coal and oiling!

How's that? :p

Let's get back to the screenshots guys...

what is that? and how did you get the kipplores (v-dumps) to load?

teddytoot
March 21st, 2007, 07:03 AM
To deal with the questions raised.

The Simplex is NG with rotating wheels and smoke and driver. As mentioned in the thread on meshes, it is kevmt's SG Simplex interior mesh (with a new skin that he has kindly done for me) attached to a skeleton loco. He has also allowed me to upload it to the DLS, subject to his usual licence/reskinning restrictions, and it is awaiting approval. There is an engine file to go with it which is as realistic as I can get with a top speed of 8mph.

The other loco is another War Department Light Railway petrol tractor from World War 1. It is a McEwan Pratt (Baguley) 10hp tractor designed for the light trench tracks but was a failure, partly because it was too light and feeble and partly because its exhaust glowed in the dark making a perfect target for German gunners. It was relegated for use in depots and forestry sites. It is my first creation that is all my own work. I am still not satisfied with the texturing but will upload it, if wanted, when I get time/inspiration to improve it.

My kipplores came loadable for sand. All I have done is add coal as a load. The Merced ore car has been made loadable for my own use by adding a mesh to the empty version. Adding meshes is a very powerful and underexploited tool for improving rolling stock by adding missing loads, passengers, drivers and cab and outside views. It also needs very little GMax ability to do.

here's an interesting piece of information about the Talyllyn Railway (I will be making a screen shot :D)

apparently after the TR bought Corris No. 3 & 4 they were un-usable for more than maintenance reasons. It seems that Dolgoch (being the only running engine for some time) had bent the tracks to conform to its own preferences, thus making the track very very out of shape for the other engines. How odd is that?

just thought it was interesting...

I have the DEM route sitting on my computer, the problem is is that there isn't any sort of reference (apart from the minimap, which has a very nice map of the area, but the bloody thing isn't showing up on the ground) - like the blue lines for rivers, black lines for track, red for roads, etc on the ground, which is making things really difficult for mwah. For some reason when I looked at it first the second picture didn't display hence my error (I think my broadband link is sometimes too fast for the quality of the line, as I regularly get problems with corrupted images or fast downloads). Redline.

May I offer a tip for making Track and Fence lines a little more frame rate friendly.
As you have shown a few screen shots taken in surveyor i can see so many spline points that can be removed without changeing the overall effect.
If you only place fence spline points alongside the track splines on curves (you won't need more in between them) and use the straighten tool on the straight sections of fence it will make the curved sections follow the track curves.
You can apply the same system for your track work as well,to reduce the number of splines required with out changing the overall effect.

Please accept these suggestions not as criticisms but as helpful tips.

Cheers.
NormP.
