Your questions are important to us and someone will answer

Just call my Captain Rude
Dear fellow trainz users I have noted of late that there have been quite a few persons posting questions about their current issues and when they do not get replies to there enquires within a set time frame they can then get how do I put it – quite stroppy.

Peoples please note if its a question about a TS12 issues many of us regular contributors to the forums have only in the last 2 weeks received our copies of the package and many of the esteemed brain trust are themselves only just getting to grips to this new version. It will take some time for us all to get up to speed on this new trainz beast.

One other thing to note is that we live in all areas of our wonderful planet and often the best person to answer your problem is in a whole different time zone and fast asleep.

I have never in all my years on the forums seen questions go unanswered but please relax it may take time for someone to get to your question who has just the right knowledge or answer.

What is of the biggest help to the gun gurus is for you to take a few moments before posting your question and just see if you have the right area of the forums for your question. For example if you need a 2006 question answered the best place to find 2006 gurus is in the 2006 area of the forums

The search button is your best friend, its found on the blue tool bar top of the page take a little time to play with that feller and you may find that someone else has had the same problem as you and the fix has already been posted.

This is very well said, Bearcat. Perhaps this post should become a sticky!

Just a suggestion....

Since your question seems to be for TS12, it may be answered faster if posted in the TS12 forum.

Just my thoughts, but I am sure someone will help you.

Regards,

Set the file association to point to CMP in TS12. It's under My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types. Fine the CDP extension and change it to point to the correct ContentManager. Repeat for CDP2 and CDPA, if you want...I haven't encountered those yet.

TS12 doesn't seem to setup the file associations properly, you can choose 'open with' in windows, but it won't actually do what it's supposed to do.

I manually fixed mine by using ASHociation (a program to edit file associations), and setting the open action for cdp files to:

Code:
"F:\TS12\bin\ContentManager.exe" "%1"

Likewise you can change the file icon to anything you want, probably one from ContentManager.exe.

ASHociation (or any other file association editor) isn't easy to use, so if you're not comfortable with techie stuff, you might want to try and cope until N3V release a patch that fixes this. You can still drag and drop CDP files into an open Content Manager window until then.

Help with 2009

I have a question for you.

why is everything writen in what I call morse code. Some people on here are new to trainz and even the elders, as stated before, are having trouble getting a grip on 2012.

People, this is a game, not a collage cource. It is supposed to be fun.

Example In the CCG:
"when an existing config.txt is loaded, the program will "Parse" the text file and gather 2 diiferant sorts of information".

The word could have been "examine".

Farce was even place in quotations to insure that the reader took note of the Big collage word.

We are not interested in how intelligent you are, we want to know and understand the game.

You have created a game that caters to a nitch market of collage grads.
You have ailianated yourself from 90% of the gaming world by doing this.

You realy should look into trying to make the program just a little more user friendly!

An excellent example of why programmers should NOT write their own help texts; they tend to speak in programming language and not 'users'. When I saw the word 'parse' I knew exactly what it meant, but, as you pointed out, users may be confused.

I've always advocated having persons from a secretarial pool or user's group install and run the program; then write up a rough draft of how THEY use it.

Except we're not talking about the user's guide, we're talking about CCG, and I'm sorry, but if the CCG was written to be 'dumbed down' it would most likely be near useless and result in even worse config.txt horrors than the DLS clean-up has had to deal with.

Configuration of an asset is a necessarily technical issue, and should be documented as technically and accurately as possible.

All true, but I maintain that selection of words can be made which impart the knowledge without having to look up a word. If the wording is in 'plain language' it can be run through translator software much easier by a person who does not have English as a first language.

I can convey 'technicality' and 'accuracy' by using fifty-cent words instead of two-dollar jawbusters.

And I agree, Ed, that 'parse' is pretty much in the real world now. ;)

Gee, I went to grade (primary) school in the 1940's and we had a subject called grammar. We learned to parse a sentence and diagram the results. Of course, now days schools don't teach grammar, geography, civics, real history, multiplication tables or hardly anything that's useful for everyday life. I'm obsolete:'( .

Well said Bob.

Cheers

We learn most of that now anyway - and barely any of that is useful - why don't we learn things needed??
