Would Trainz operate on a laptop/ Is laptop suppose to have 400,000 files before use?

Would Trainz operate on a laptop, or is just a matter of having a suitable system, be it laptop, desktop, etc?
And is a new laptop suppose to have almost 400,000 files before use?

Yes, it will, and does, and yes, I wouldn't be surprised about the number of files.

I have had all versions of Trainz I have registered working on my laptop, a 3 year old HP Pavillion dv6 series computer.

Of course, I only have TS2010 and TS12 installed now, but they work fine. If you do have lag issues on anything but Multiplayer, see this video tutorial (shaneturner12, feel free to post a link to this video on your website.):

Most laptops are not intended for gaming at all, especially Trainz.

A "Full Size Tower" (not a slim tower) 4Gb RAM, (@ 500GB to 1TB Hard drive), desktop is the best choice, @ $800 USD, with a quallity video card added on for @ $80-$200 USD.

Most desktops have a cheepo 300Watt Power supply, that will only accomodate a choice few 300Watt video cards. An add on higher wattage Power Supply costs @ $80 USD, and $50 instalation by a tech, at a big box store.

Without a dedicated video card, Trainz will play with choppy framerates. Integrated graphics PC's will not play Trainz well at all ! (Possibly TRS2006 though).

With a slow CPU also, Trainz will not run well.

A laptop that runs Trainz will cost @ $1000+ USD (although price is not an indication of a quality laptop, as some pricy laptops come nowhere near 2.8Ghz - 3.3Ghz CPU, and have a Pee-uney 13" to 15" screen).

Alienware laptops are @ $1500, $2000, $2500 or more

Most laptops are @ 2.0Ghz, 2.2Ghz, 2.5Ghz CPU, and are questionable for running Trainz.

Forget that idea, it's only "Intel UMA Shared Graphics", but again, we were told dedicated graphics.
It's also only got "Intel Celeron Processor B800 1.50GHz CPU & 2GB RAM" But then again, Trainz would drain the battery.

A wise move, not a hope with that.

If your using a laptop that has Integrated Graphics, you can also run trainz using Gamebooster. Gamebooster 3.5 beta is out now and this version increases the fps even more than previous gameboosters. I ran it on one of my routes in trainz that has a good amount of detail here and there and it ran at around 15-23 fps. For me, anything above 20fps is great. Without gamebooster, it would run at around 10-13 fps.

Don't worry - I will make use of the video at some point in the future.

Needs mentioning that Game booster will no longer be free from tomorrow http://www.iobit.com/press/2012-05-14.html notice that their download page doesn't say anything about thisuntill you click the actual download link, however I had a message come up on their Malware Fighter around a month ago stating it was no longer to be free.

Odd, while some scenery may appear as lines, MSTS runs fine on it, yet we installed the Trainz disk on the desktop, and we are having issues with it, such as missing track (the white dasked lines). Maybe understandable if items were added, but on the ACTUAL Trainz disk itself?

The affected scenery for that above simulate is only a very small amount. Get's "squished" in, but still okay. Depending on area, the frame rates were about 20 - 60 frps.

Hi captainkman thanks for the useful infos, I've deleted the speedtree dll and its improved the framerates , altough I can't make any modifications in the trainzoptions.txt , trying to save and simply the access denied. Seems can't modificate anything.. For example it said the resolution is 1024*768 , framerate 200 , I wanna change my basic resolution to 1366*768 and the ResourceMemory=4020 but can't save these infos in trainzoptions. Im admin, running everything admin and can't change settings in notepad. So actually I have to accept the fact what trainzoptions said without be able to change? The other question its out of topic what is that red number in your screen left bottom side? When you moving the coursor? It looks good. How can I istall that? I have ASUS notebook by the way. Thanks for advance - Dom

Hi Dom,

Glad to see that Shane has provided the answer to the not being able to save problem, and I'm wondering why I have never had that problem before. Is it because I have the only accound on my laptop or is it something to do with Vista, or with my files and folders settings?

The red number is from Fraps, which is the screen recording software I use. When i'm not recording it is yellow, and red means it is recording. The number is showing the framerate. It increases when I move the mouse as it refreshes the screen as I do so and the number is low when the mouse is stationary as there is not as much need to refresh the screen. To get it yourself, get the free version of Fraps and don't record anything. It will show the framerate, even in Trainz. i use Fraps for Trainz and other games too. If you decide to record Trainz video, the counter won't be visible if it is uploaded to YouTube, but you can see it in Trainz and on the desktop.

Hi Kieran, thank you very much for the detailed answer.. You and Shane can provide us a better experience on a low-end laptops , funny tho but some of us really using 1.73-2.00 GHz notebooks & laptops and expect fully compatibility and smooth run ... LOL. So our only chance to try out different graphical settings and reading forum posts how it is possible get out more framerates and improve the game . Thanks both of you for the info's guys.. (almost forgot to mention that the gamebooster which provided by Malikrthr here in the forum, also works well and help a lot with CPU. Regards Dom.

You're welcome.

I'm running a 2.00GHz laptop, and it is prone to overheat, but I do have a cooling fan for it. TS2010 runs great on full graphics, with minimal stuttering. If you lower the settings, even Avery-Drexel works!

I find TS12 runs with the graphical settings all on low, and it doesn't look any different except for framerates, which are a lot faster with my changes in place.

i to have a 3 year old hp g60 notebook amd turion dual-core rm-72 2.10ghz , find it at walmart for $500, it dose get hot when running, but the cooling fan helps, and i try to set in air cond places to, i am thinking about upgradeing in to dv7t-7000 still unsure what to do, i tell you this g60 is a very strong notebook, i only run ts 09 in it, very detail maps do good,

How up to date are or is this graphic card(s)?
nVIDIA GeForce GT 650M (Optimus) + Intel® HD Graphics 4000.

And also what Nvidia Ge-Force with three numbers on the end as shown, is equivalent to the 8600 or 8800?

And on a site note, would you notice any performance difference between say an i3 & i5? or i5 & i7? (And why do these "i" seem to go up every second number?) The most important question though is about the video card.
