Well of course steam engines were used for other purposes, and steam cars were all the rage at one time, I had just never seen how imposing they looked in this application.
I watched a show on the history channel once that showed Jay Leno taking a pair of his steam cars out on the road...it was awesome to watch. These, must be so MUCH cooler! nice catch, thanks for sharing!
I read about a steam tractor festival in the UK a few years ago, but I can't remember where. The do look really impressive though, and I can't imagine anyone else getting in the way of one of these things as they travel down the road.
After nine positive, reassuring reply posts I finally plucked up courage to click on the OP link. Why was I expecting to see a donkey, ridden by a back-to-front driver blowing a bugle?
A very interesting link Ed. Thanks.
However, nothing will persuade me to part with my existing road vehicle (a legacy Raleigh bicycle) and upgrade to one of these newfangled contraptions. It is notable, looking at the "BONUS:Antique wrecks" section that they weren’t all particularly robust either.
It must have been some tough stray chicken that BJ 2408 ran over!:hehe:
I found I got lost there too. Some of the future pictures from the 1920s and 1950s were quite funny. I like the steam engines and streamliners that we're supposed to have had in 2002.
Some of the other pictures were just funny. Some people do really scary things like carry giant sacks of dry goods on a scooter.
I've actually been on the Sentinel Steam Passenger Bus - it was doing runs on the public highway up in Cumbria two or three years back. It has a pretty rough ride from what I remember, but the state of the roads over here can't have helped. Anyhow, it was certainly quite a contraption.....
Thanks for sharing those pics. Very impressive restoration works on view indeed, and I had no idea there was such a variety. Usually here all we see is the steam driven farming equipment in the museums.
Good find Ed.
Here's a scary though,
Seeing one of those steam tractors going down the road today with the the operator on their cell phone, eating a sandwich and drinking(not necessarily an beverage). Talk about a road hazard!
