"WASHINGTON — Metro managers and investigators are looking into the cause of an early morning derailment on the city's subway system halted the commute for the more than 60 passengers on board. No injuries were reported in the accident.
According to NBC Washington, a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Red Line train derailed near the system's Farragut-North station several blocks north of the White House and National Mall.
The television station cites passengers saying that they heard a "loud shake and a bang" before their train stopped. The cars involved were part of WMATA's newest fleet of 7000-series cars from Kawasaki.
The derailment comes a week after WMATA managers proposed a money-back guarantee on certain delayed trains, as a way to entice oft-delayed customers to return to WMATA. It also comes nearly three years after a smoke incident killed a passenger; and after several years of wrangling over WMATA's safety, operations, and funding."
