Hello dear readers!
Today I finally managed to modify the material for the boiler in a way which looks satisfying for an old, rough and rusty surface. It is a Vray material:

Reflect and Refract is set to 0. The material uses three maps, Diffuse, Reflect and Bump. Diffuse and Reflect are mixed maps consists of a texture and a smoke effect (color #1 = 32, 32, 32, color#2 = 0, 0, 0), the Bump is a texture file.
Here a render picture of the surface:

As you can see it looks quite realistic in this closeup.
How do one get Vray materials into Trainz?
Not at all. I do not know any exporter which can handle materials other than Standard. That's why Render to Texture is necessary. Naturally most of the effects which the Vray materials have will be gone, but a generally better impression can be achieved.
