Both are very good systems. Honestly when it comes down to it Intel vs AMD it's really just your call on which company you like better, the performance difference isn't as big as people would think.

I will say this though, I would dump the 74GB Raptor drives. Assuming they use SATA II 500GB drives you'll actually be slowing down your computer by using the 10,000rpm Raptors.

The video card may be a bit overkill for Trainz, especially since Trainz doesn't take advantage of both GPU's. However, there is a chance the 1GB on the HD3870 X2 is better than the 512MB on the HD3870.
On a side note however, ATI has just released the HD4850 and the HD4870 is about somewhere around 1-3 weeks away so I might wait and see what the newest has to offer.

Vista vs XP is your choice, I'd say go with Vista, but there will be many who will say stick to XP, it all depends on what YOU want to do with the computer.

If you go the AMd way, considering the price difference, get a 6400 XP+ instead of a 6000. For the Ram, get 2x2GB to permit evolution, 4GB should not be a goal but the first step up the ladder. ATI ... Regarding hard drives, idem though RAID0 with 1TB? I wouldn't chance it.
Trainz 2004 runs without a glitch on Vista, it's your choice though with 4GB of ram, a 64bit OS is the road you'll have go down on.
