Im thinking of moving over to Trainz,as I like the Surveyor idea,Which one should I buy Trainz 2006 or, Trainz Railways the latest one from Just Trains?
I also found somewhere on the web, I think it was linked to Trainz or Auran web sites, where it gave you a video demo of how to use various things in the world builder editor, the first tutorial I remember was creating a tunnel, but I cant locate the page anywhere,I would appreciate if someone could point me in right direction.

thanks

Hello, my advice to you would be to buy directly from Auran, there are a couple of major reasons for this :-
Auran is having a sticky time financially, therefore, all monies would help them to develop the game further.
You need to have the disc in your DVD drive all the time if you get the Just Trains version, which will ultimately overwork both the disc and the driver.
May I suggest obtaining the TRS2004 Deluxe Edition, which as well as the TRS2004 game also includes the relevant patch (SP4) and Paintshed and extra content, which you would need to purchase separately, if you bought the Just Trains version......
This is my personal recommendation for a new starter, I'm sure some will entice you to buy TRS2006 first with the CMP feature, which although is very good and this has been carried on with the TC (Trainz Classics) series, I feel that starting at the bottom and working your way up the ladder will give you more practice, technical knowledge, and sheer enjoyment.

Happy trainzing.

Trainz is a very power-hungry game and Trainz Classics and TRS2006 both love all the power they can get. It really depends how good your computer specs are and the better they are the better Trainz will run.
So do you know what your computer specs are as this can impact how well Trainz runs.

Or 'Trainz Collection' gives you both '04 and '06.

Of course TC3 is due soon too. ;)

Mike.
That's news to me, I have both 04 and 06 as my computer would never put up with 3 Trainz games. It can hardly run 1!!!:(

Last time I looked, brand new and totally legitimate copies of TRS2004 and TRS2006 were available online in the UK for five pounds each including delivery. Try amazon.co.uk and play.com . Be sure it says TRS2004 or TRS2006 in the description and also on the photo of the CD case. Avoid anything which just says Trainz or Trainz Ultimate Collection (UTC) as they are very old versions. At that price, it might be worth getting both TRS2004 and TRS2006 as opinions differ as to which is best. They can co-exist on the same computer provided there's enough hard disk space, with a minor easily circumvented complication regarding directing downloads to the correct one.

Trainz Railways (also called Trainz Railwayz and Trainz Classics/TC) is a new version which lacks many of the built-in assets that are included in TRS2004 and TRS2006. That means most of the numerous additional layouts and activities that are available won't work with it. It has its fans but sorry, I'm not one of them.

Well put, John.
My sig link below has the recommended version to look at. If the box looks like I have it pictured, you'll get everything needed in one package and it will keep you busy for years.
That's a promise.

Hi ayrforce - well, nobody spoke up about TRS 2006, so I guess I will. I started in Trainz with 2004, then got 2006 and never went back. With some relatively minor differences (to me), simulations run about the same in both. Surveyor is a Trainz mode in which you build your own route or develop sessions to run on existing routes. To me, there is a real difference in the ease of using Surveyor, 2006 being the easier.

A big difference between the two is in the Content Manager (CMP) available in 2006. You need another piece of software called TrainzObject (free) to so the same thing in 2004. Yes, there is a lot of controversy and a lot of knashing of teeth by some in that the CMP is a bit cranky with much of the problem probably related to Auran's download station and the way we interact with it. But the CMP works fine for me and it is a quick and easy way to get new assets into my game, whether they are on the DLS or are third party. That's probably the main reason I don't go back to 2004.

For many hours of enjoyment, indeed, addiction, I don't think you can go wrong with either 2004 or 2006, but thought comments about the former should be supplemented with some about the latter.

Have fun!

Best bet is to go with TRS2006. I have every version Auran ever made. Recently picked up Trainz Classic and by the look of things I wasted my money. Looking at some of the content it looks like it was thrown together by a couple of kids. Take most of the included station, passenger have their feet embedded into the platform and you cannot raise them. If I were to start over I would go straight for TRS2006. All the TC series are all just a money making ripoff.

Hello Aryforce,

I just wanted to add my two cents to the discussion. There is a package available called Trainz Railwayz which includes both Trainz Classics 1 & 2 and TRS2006.

If you do not plan to download older assets (that is only download assets that are designed to work on TC 1 and/or 2) then TC is definitly the way to go. I have been extremely happy with my copy of TC. I am running an "older" HP PC running and AMD athlon64 3200+ @ 800Mhz with 1gb of ram, DX9.0c and a Radion X1650 video with 512MB ram @ 1680 x 1050 res. and have excellent results.

However, TRS2006 does not work as well. I always have stutter on this system. I realize I need an upgrade but I can not do so for several years to come. CMP provides the never clearing "updating database" screen about 75% of the time and used to drive me absolutely nuts but if you know for sure you have not made any changes that require the database to be updated, you can simply press the escape while the message window is active and it will go away and not trouble you further. Another minor annoyance with 06 cmp is I have to completely exit cmp then restart in order to access the game instead of clicking on the 2006 icon at the top of the cmp screen. If you want content though, this is the best platform!

If you go the TC route, and you plan to download none-TC content - particularly content that uses built-in assets such as locomotives and rollingstock or even some industries and others, you will have to have 2006 available so that you can import the built-in content from that platform to make it work in TC. Now having said this, you should know that I have downloaded the DHR and have it working beyound my wildest imaginings. Yes, I did have to do a bit of importing to get some assets to work - this is to be expected with none TC content - so be for-warned.

As for the up-coming and much anticipated TC3 - only time will tell if Auran releases it without the legacy content. I would expect them to do so since the release is actually targetted at improvements and to include the old content could introduce could be detrimental.

Of course, if Auran does include the older content, I will guarantee that we will be getting people who will fill the forums with complaints that the old content "does not function as it should". On the otherhand, if it is not included, you will get all those other complaints that "content is broken" or "my downloads don't work". A catch 22 situation if ever there one.

Lastly, as the product is maturing, we as content creators will be moving to create for the platform that we personally own. As for myself, once I get back on feet after chemo, I will be focusing my efforts mainly on TC products, though a handful of items will be produced for 04/06 as I have promised these previously.

Good luck with your choice. No matter which product you choose, once you recognize the limitations, you will find that you have the greatest product on earth!

Have fun!

Brian
