Hi trainzer and the question I will ask is this at while ago I used Norton AntiVirus and then used AVG Free for the last 5 years but now I hear that Nortons AntiVirus 2010 has come out online a free for 30 days and then you can buy it. Is it better with Nortons at $40 or AVG for free and it takes over three hours to run so I would like to know Mario

I have used AVG Free for a number of years without any problems. Scanning a large hard disk can be time consuming but it is not necessary to do this too often. So long as your anti-virus software is up to date and running (ie monitoring your computer) then this is sufficient because a virus is only dangerorus when its executable file is run and AVG will pick this up and block it where the virus is known to the database, hence the need for regular updates.

I have 3 kids that use my machine and when I can be bother to do a full scan the software will sometimes find a virus, trojan or other nasty but they are all essentially harmless until they try to run themselves or get run by mistake by the user.

Stick with AVG, make sure that all of the elements of it are up to date and active by checking the status in the 'User Interface' and just run a full scan when you are not intending to use the computer for anything else.

If you system gets scanned on a regular basis as per the default settings when installing AVG then you can change this in Tools and then Advanced settings.

Other readers of the forum my shout me down for not running regular scans of my system but I have never had a problem doing things this way

I wouldn't use Norton now, not only did Symantec take over Norton now they take over your PC as well, I use AVG on a couple of PC's and Avast on the others.
I also wouldn't get the latest version of any AV program as soon as it's announced but wait for the inevitable bugs to ironed out, I believe Norton stuffed up an update just a couple of weeks ago. ;)

Any Antivirus program including Norton if they are doing the job properly will take a long time to scan your PC due to the thousands of files it has to check, the more there are the longer it takes, running it overnight is the best bet.

You gets what you pay for, I'm afraid.
AVG is good, no doubt, but you'll find their definitions and fixes for the latest threats way behind that of Norton. Has to be this way, they don't have the resources that the likes of Norton have.

IMHO, running games on Windows you can't go past Norton's Gaming Edition. I believe you can get this on a thirty day trial too.

My Daughters boyfriend has just purchased nortons recently & installed it since then he has had so many problems.One of which was Nortons started to continually crash,when running the system sans came up clean.Since then he installed AVG free which found around about 18 different viruses on his system all apparently attacking Nortans & either giving faule results or shutting it down.
He has now uninstalled the purchased Nortons & using AVG & all has been running fine since.

AVG7.5 was excellent. Opinions differ regarding AVG8. If you get on with it fine but some people find it a nightmare. Good free alternatives if you need them are Avast and Avira.

Cookies are helpful and harmless, don't worry about them.

I use ClamWin - the windows build of ClamAV, a freeware and opensource virus scanner.

I first heard about ClamAV through using Debian Linux, and have since made it my main AV of choice. The UI is uncluttered and it seems to do a good job of keeping my system clean.

I, too, used to like AVG Free, but I have heard too many complaints about the 6/7/8 series versions to be willing to give it another shot.

Have to agree with Geoff here. AVG (free version is reasonable) but does tend to give more "false positive" than most other A/V programs.
Norton's clearly has a better detection rate and is a better product.
Some of the people that have had problems with Norton's have had things like "existing registry problems" etc, etc and installing Norton's on a PC that has existing registry problems screws up Norton's. Before installing Norton's, run a good registry cleaning program.
The best time to install any A/V or Internet Security suite is straight after you have done a clean install of your OS...

I use Norton's on a couple of older PC's and have never had the slightest problem. Mind you, I gave them a good clean-out before I installed the latest Norton's A/V on one PC & Norton's 360 (Ver 3) on the other. Very happy with both products...
For my main PC I have always used NOD32. In my personal opinion, the best A/V program out there !!! In this part of the world it what most IT Tec's use.

If you have an IT mate, or have a computer repair store nearby, ask the Tec's there what A/V or internet suite program they use, (& why)...

I bought Norton a few years ago but when I tried to renew I got through to the usual "Indian call centre".The lady there spoke the most mangled version of English I have ever heard and in the course of a 30 minute phone call asked "which country is York in?" and then gave the price of the renewal in dollars! I slammed the phone down and they'll never get any of my money again.
 
I don't know about the latest versions, but when Personal Computer World tested anti-virus software a while ago, they found AVG free much better than Avast!. I personally use AVG free and also WinPatrol which warns me of new programs trying to run. It stopped a new root kit virus from running and I was able to remove it without harm, but a lot of trouble. AVG free has its limitations but over the years that I have used it, I have had little trouble from malware.
 
This is probably obvious but FWIW: with any anti-virus, anti-adware or other anti-malware program it's vital to keep its definition lists up-to-date. With anti-virus programs this should done at least daily. Most modern programs default to automatic updating.

Hello everyone and I made up my mind went with Nortons AntiVirus 2010 and see how it goes and I got it online and so far works good and I still keep in mind Nortons AntiVirus Game Edition. Thank you again for everything that was said Mario

Well, when things go wrong because of Norton , don't say you weren't warned!
 
Rusty I have had Nortons before with no problems and the person that was doing my computer said try out AVG and it has started to become not as good as it was when I first started it. If I have to get into problems then I will go back to AVG or something difference so I will see and I will tell you Mario :)
 
Hi people and I though 2010 was freezing up the board and call them once and was taken off and told me the isp had to be change and called up Verizon and they said call back Nortons and did and a supervisor handal it and found they was more AVG hiding. He went through it and took everything off and it now runs very good and if I have anymore problems he will do it Mario :)
