What simulator to buy???

I have TS2006 and TS2009. I see that TS12 is now available. I am not interested in multi player but would like enhanced graphics. TC2010 has a new SpeedTree feature that looks enticing. I wonder if TC12 is just TC2010 with a multi player module or does it have additional features. To summarize, should I jump to TS12 or TS2010 if I am looking for better graphics and perhaps some new routes?

Also, the latest newsletter showed two sims that look interesting. Classic Carbon City and Murehinson 2. Any comments on these products?

I wish there was a definitive listing of the features and routes provided for each Trainz product. Perhaps there is one and I just haven't found it.

TS2012 has some electric routes which interest me.To me, it's more of a content upgrade than anything else, as I am not really interested in multiplayer either. TS2012 is also supposed to have more advanced signaling courtesy of signals to be released by Jointedrail, although TS2010 appears to support 30+ signal states as well and apparently earlier versions do too. This is not a feature Auran is extolling, but rather third-parties.

I don't think the quality of graphics has improved over TS2010. Even TS2010, and probably earlier, is capable of producing near-photorealistic scenery with the right assets. I do think the bar is being raised as to what people find to be acceptable quality, however. Audio is improved somewhat in TS2012, including doppler.

I have Cabon City as well as Murchison. Excellent routes, and well worth the money. The detail is amazing. Murchison, which I just bought and haven't thoroughly checked out, also has quite a variety of activities, from logging lines to freight, ship driving and even a helicopter session, though I have not gotten to that one yet. The author, Sirgibby, posts new screenshots weekly in the Screenshots and the Payware forums.

I should also mention that Modula City is one of my all-time favorites; it is produced by Trainzland, the same people behind Cabon, but strangely is not sold through Auran. Even more strange is the version on Trainzland's website is not the most current version; you have to contact them to get the most current one. But it's AMAZING! A demo version is included with TS2010; not sure about 2012 though.

Welcome to the Trainz Forums!

I suggest that you purchase TS12 (TS2012) as this is the current version. It's not necessary to use the mutliplayer even if it's built-in. You can still use this as a stand-alone program.

The Trainz add-ons Cabon City and Murchison are awesome. Murchison 2 takes place in New Zealand, but is a really great route to drive. There are many sessions available for this route.

The S&C is also a worthy purchase as well as that is well done and very fun to drive.

The listings unfortuantely are pretty vague, but they always have been.

From what I understand, TS2012 has improved graphics - much more so over TS2010, which was much improved over TRS2006 and TS2009. The draw distance is supposed to be longer outside of the cab. There are still the limits within the cab, but now there's a long distance over view- satelight view I guess you could call it.

The routes for TS2010 are supposed to be new and include a section of the NEC as well as one from China and another from Europe. I think the usual ones from TS2010 and below are still there as well.

If you have content from TS2009, it should import okay into TS2012, and anything made for TS2010 will work 100% from what I understand.

I hope I was able to help you with some of your questions.

Hehe i would reccomend the latest one available, but i am still stuck on 2006 :D until i can afford a PC and TS12 (I have 2009 on my laptop)

Glad I found this thread. Saves me starting a new one:) . As can be seen, I have quite a few Trainz incarnations. What's strange is I had the most fun with Trainz 2004. I was lukewarm about TS2010. I judge them based on "fun factor" and the urge to play it over a long period of time. I had that with TRS2004. The releases after 2004 all seemed to just be minor upgrades and more eye candy. I guess people were happy with that. My major gripe with TS2010 was the one everyone was and is complaining about...missing content on the DLS. I'm not a big fan of hunting down missing files. I'm more interested in operating the trains. But that's just me. :p

Soooo...my question is how happy are people with TS2012? Did you suffer any buyer's regret after installing it on your comp? Did it have the same fun factor as previous versions or do you think it's lacking in content? The reason I ask all this is Auran is offering a limited time deal of $39.95 for the sim. But you might as well add in another $25.00 for the 1 year DLS ticket.
So we are talking $65.00. That's a lot of cash to plunk down in these economic times. I want to make sure I get my money's worth.;)

While I dont want to start a new thread for my question. I will ask it in here and I was wondering if Trainz 12 still has the DCC throttle Control as that is what I use in Trainz 2010. I love that feature......

Hi Dep,

Note sure if the 20% sale on TS12 is still in effect....

http://www.auran.com/shop/display_product.php?p=3&PID=362

Think it expired, but who knows for sure.

Is it safe to say that you read the posts in the TS12 forum, some are pro, some are con. Of course, with every new Trainz release, the pros and cons always surface.

As always, the choice is yours.

Regards,
Ron

Hi Ron,
Here is the link I got in the mail:
http://www.auran.com/newsletter/trainz/2011/voucher/Trainz_July19Voucher.html

Looks like it's in effect until July 29th.

I guess you're right about "opinions may vary". I have a firend that buys the Trainz stuff as soon as it's released. Mybe I'll go to his house and check out 2012. I'd hate to make the same mistake I did with some of the other releases.

Well after upgrading to TS12, I can add that there are some improvements over the previous versions.

I was mistaken in that the TS2010 routes were included, given that this was the default from years before. However, I was able to bring them into TS12 without any issues.

For the most part, all the content I had over the years, has worked okay including some 1.3 buildings and things. I was probably lucky that I had repaired thousands of assets before for my TRS2009 and TS2010 installs, so most of the assets were able to come in fine.

As a current users, I can say that with the AI fixes, improved signal scripting, the graphics improvements, and other little tweaks here and there, the program is a lot of fun to use. However, there are still some bugs, and we're waiting for the re-release of SP2, which must've fixed things that I'm not aware of, but was pulled due to technical difficulties.

Anyway, as I said quite a long time ago in this same thread, you might want to consider TS12 because it is the latest generation of the program rather than spending the money twice to go from TS2010 to TS12.

BUY RAILWORKS!. 2010 Is definately better than 2009. A few people have had issues with layers but it,s not difficult once you learn what to do in Routes and what to do in sessions. Xp is not suited for TS12 but some people are ok with it. 2010 is supposedly easier for newbies. TS12 has more up To date content but using older content is more difficult. I am happy with 2010 and you can always download more content. I,ll probably upgrade from XP eventually and move on to TS12 or the next version. People have had good experiences and bad experiences from both versions so you pays your money and takes your choice:wave: And if you encounter any problems, that's what these forums are for. And now to do a runner before Aardvark reads this:D

As a fairly new person to Trainz Simulator I bought the 2012. I have to say that sense I have bought it I have been very impressed with the game. I have downloaded verious assets from the DLS and have not had very many that I have had to search down kuids for ( about 5 currently ) and I have only had a few assets fault out ( maybe 15 and all old content pre trainz 2009 ). So I would highly recomend the TS 12 to anyone. As for which would be better well..... I can't say I had bought 2010 for some of the assets it contained before I realized they were on DLS.

John: How much of an improvement is TS2012 over 2010. I have seen and compared the trees with other tree versions (Trunda) and I must say the trees aren't all that impressive. Is there a major leap in graphics beyind the trees, or is it pretty much the same as 2010?
