What has happened to Englands forgotten stations?

Hi everyone

My home town, Wisbech, is now one of the largest market towns in East Anglia lacking a railway service. The old 7.8 mile rail line connection from March, Cambs is in place but mothballed and closed by Network Rail. Wisbech once had two stations served by two seperate branch lines - Wisbech North Station on the former 1866 - 1959 M&GN branch between Peterborough (Cambs) and Sutton Bridge (Lincolnshire), and Wisbech East Station on the former 1847 - 1968 GER branch between March, Cambs and King's Lynn, Norfolk.

All that remains today is part of the Great Eastern line running from March, Cambs, connecting to the Peterborough - Ely line at Whitemoor Junction at March. Whilst the King's Lynn portion was lifted and in places built upon after 1968 closure. Hopes are growing with Railfuture's campaign to get Wisbech rail served once again and our local MP Steven Barclay has been meeting with the Department of Transport recently to try and secure further funding for a possible site regarding a new Wisbech Station. The old station (on the branch from March) was lost in 1971 when demolished by a short-sighted town council.

If the funding can indeed be awarded by the DFT, plans will quickly move ahead to secure a new viable station site as close as possible to Wisbech Town centre. The hope is, Wisbech will get directly connected to both Cambridge and Peterborough by rail, slashing commuter travel times, and bringing much needed jobs and infrastructure to this part of the Fenlands.
