were these people out to lunch when they organized this sim?

It just seems to me they had to be, here is an example earlier I downloaded some stuff from the station, the U25C said it needed dependencies so I downloaded them also to my downloads page, when I got to my downloads page they show up as kuid#'s nothing like what I downloaded which had for example EMD 16-645E engine sounds, at least you know what the hell you had, so I figured it would be easier to go back to the station and look at the U25 download and see which kuid's are for what, guess what no matter what I type in the search I draw a blank, now I know from looking through the loco pages there is many downloads for U-boats, V&O, Virginia & Ohio etc, seems like you spend more or rather waste more time looking for things due to the hap hazard way they organized this cluster........, and it is sad, there are many cool things that maybe done with this sim, seems to me there has to be a simpler better way,how hard would it have been to design it where when one downloads the dependencies they show up just as they are on the station with their name and kuid, look at the main list in the Rail yard that's a circle jerk to,I apologize if I have offended anyone by this it was not my intent.

Most of the content of the DLS was created by fellow Trainzers and so lack of control or standards abounds. Add to this that many Trainzers are from all over the world, not just USA or Australia, so language creeps in too.

Yes it can be a bind finding things, but search and you will find (usually)

The DLS after many years of additions by the Community was in a state that needed upgrading and errors/warnings corrected. This is currently under way, and many previously acceptebla standards have now been implemented, so uploaded items will be of acceptable standard from now on.

Disorganized U25B...

 ...gosh, that attempt has produced the only 4-axle US-American U-boat we have...:hehe:

Yes, there are a lot of files to deal with on that one.

It was originally produced by Diecastgalore, then CincySouthern. The DLS versions are CincySouthern.

The Diecastgalore versions are availible at TPR Download Depot for CB&Q & Milwaukee Road. There are many files. I feel like some were omitted on the DLS version.

We have a Content Creation Guide, the current is TC Content Creation Guide

All of that in one sentence also. I tip my hat! :D

Trainz sort of evolved rather than was planned. The models you see typically are made of parts, bogies are separate, this was a design decision made many years ago and it made sense at the time from a performance point of view maybe.

The nice side to it as a content creator I don't have to build bogies every time I make a wagon and as a user you can switch in more realistic bogies should you want to. Trainz really is about the content and reskins that people have made and it does sometimes come with a price.

For example this thread about box cars from Russia includes the download location which isn't the DLS, but they are very nice box cars.

Paul thanks for bringing to my attention the fact that these things are being corrected, I can respect and noticed on the station the volume, varieties of locos alone,it was easy to see these come from people all over the globe, which is great not only for varieties sake, but gives all of us the opportunity to see different railroads etc that are or have been used in other parts of the world. At that I can respect that things could get out of hand and are hard to control, the volume of uploads per day must be phenominal, and yes I did notice the titles, one uploaded say a SW7 as SW7 UP while another was uploaded as UP SW7, one could easily see where this could accidently create mix ups, some of the quality, and attention to detail of many many of the uploads I have seen were well let me say I was pleasantly surprised, so again thank you for bringing attention to this issue and good luck, I now realize to correct these things at this stage of the game has to be quite the undertaking.

HiBaller sorry for the poor punctuation, lol, I am after all an Operating Engineer, so I make a poor poet or secretary lol, you remember the old "FONIX IT WERK'D FER ME" ? am I living proof or what lol.

John thanks for the insight, as is obvious, I was under the impression that this was a planned thing rather than something that just sort of evolved, that in itself sheds a whole new light on the subject, had I realized that earlier I would have never started this thread.

I too felt a similar frustration when I first began downloading. However, once I got into it, I find it far less frustrating to download here than I did to try playing the so-called "PvP" online games. If you look at the DLS as a sort of game quest, and then consider that at least no one else is trying to prevent you getting it done, it's really not that bad. I've finally decided that there's so many treasures stored in the DLS that I have just been going through it from A to Z and downloading anything and everything that suits my tastes. If there are missing dependencies, I simply disable the items. That way if an update should fix it, I will get the update on my updates list. As far as chasing things down from other sites, I have not gotten into that all that much yet. I am trying to put a massive route together that uses only complete DLS items and built-in content that runs well in the 2010 EE. So far, I am extremely happy with how that's going, and have about 4500 boards in place to hold it all! I am lucky enough to have a machine that can handle it (so far at least). Two small towns--one with a harbor, a portion of a city with a mass transit route, forested mountains, a desert with a sandstone canyon--complete with a rapidly flowing river, vast farm and ranch lands, a small old west theme park, and a four runway airport are all included, along with around 20 industries and 101 scale miles of track to tie them all together. It's all imaginary, yet realistic, even to the point of never seeing the route's edges...all views from the rails extend to the vanishing point. My thank you list for all the inspiring ideas and items is gonna be HUGE! As you can probably tell, I am having a blast with all this, and considering what I have been able to do so far, and what I think I can finally accomplish, any frustration with downloads has vanished into total insignificance :D

Talon that is fantastic but sure does sound like quite an undertaking, one I know without a doubt I am not ready for yet, maybe one day though, would like to see it when you are finished, sounds like quite the setup. Hey HiBaller maybe my "PUNCTIATION AIN'T THE bEST and it's probably hard to tell but atleast I guess I am not living proof that "WHEN YA BOOZE YA LOSE" although I have to admit after a while of searching I was ready for a trip to the local Gin Mill lol.

backyard thank you very much for turning me on to the Content Creation Guide, I did not realize it existed, but was looking for something similar that would explain in detail much of what I do not understand, I have not looked through all of it yet but I trust it will help me out greatly, to all of you who have helped out thank you for the slap up the back of the head, keeps my nose pointed in the right direction lol.

I guess it does sound like rather a lot, but believe me...all those who have gone before have done most of the work! I am merely using their creations and ideas and arranging them. My airport is a total ripoff from a route on the DLS, only on a much smaller scale...someone else made all the locomotives that look like horses and wagons for my western theme park, so I just have to set up some track and let them run. I just place the trees...someone else made them, and made them look good and work well. I can't imagine how awful my canyon would look without the water and rock textures I was able to download. Same goes for the tracks, industries, towns, and everything else. Others have done the hard work, and I am just the end user. I started working on this around mid-December, and then had a problem that wiped everything except the boards. The MS file cleaner program went berserk and wiped many needed files from several programs if they were text files. I restarted the route in mid-January, and figure it will take around 6 months to get it all finished. Most of that time will be devoted towards polishing up the scenery paint though. I should have all the mechanical parts of the route in place in about 2 more weeks, and AI trains running their schedules in a month or so. With the triggers and rules that others have created, all this sort of thing is much easier to do than it would be with just the built-in items. So when you download, pay extra attention to downloads with rules, triggers, controls and signals...those are the motherlode of items if you plan on using AI trains. I never planned on a large route, but as I started downloading and seeing what I wanted to include, it just kinda happened :D

Tolan at least you have the ability to understand, install and get up and running all of these many items that are required, I do not think because you did not design some of these things yourself I would call them a rip off, I understand what you are saying, but the reality is these things were made available by decent people with a vast knowledge of how this stuff works so as to help others,I have dabbled with Robe River Iron as far as adding extra side tracks, coal stage, coal unloader, which I could get the trains to run on but could not get them to auto load/unload, so ended up scrapping the saved session, but it was good learning experience, eventually I will attack the idea again in the future, when I know a little more, I would venture to say it did not work due to something simple that was probably right in front of my face but did not see or understand. Just took a look at the Content Creation Guide that to say the least is quite extensive.

Does anyone use paragraphs when posting?

Are they illegal to use in these high tech times?

Have fun,

I think fashions have changed a bit like ending a sentence with a comma rather than a full stop.

I like paragraphs so I think we should hang on to them for the sake of those of us over 21.

Have fun,

Depends on if you have java script enabled. I myself don't use java script unless absolutely necessary. As a test new paragraph starting. Testing paragraph over and out. B Nope no paragraph! No Smilies. B

Dear Readers,

My apologies--I never realized (or should I use the British Realised?) that these posts were graded. I will try to maintain proper English decorum, punctuation, and paragraph separation in all future missives.

Sincerely,

Tolansherwood

P. S. Kindly note the total absence of smilies as well.

Hi tolansherwood: Posts most assuredly are not graded however, putting a comma in the correct place does facilitate more enjoyable reading. Constructing a grammatically correct sentence is also a benefit to the reader and, if there is a change in topic, a new paragraph is a huge bonus.

None of the above are critical of course unless you wish to hold the attention of the reader right through to the end. I cannot understand why anybody would put time and effort into a thread that would lose the interest of the reader.

As for smilies? They are ok if used appropriately however, be careful with short forms. I am often surprised at the assumption that, in a Forum that caters to such a broad age range, it is assumed that everybody knows what they mean.

LOL

ps. LOL? Laughing out loud? Lots of love?

ps. LOL? Laughing out loud? Lots of love?

I always thought, on Trainz fora, that LOL stood for "Linda's Old Lamppost".

Cheers

PS I fully agree that good use of English, and appropriate punctuation, makes for a much easier read.

PPS Is it, "fora", or, "forums"?

There is a story that a person knocking on the Pearly gate was requested to identify themselves.
The person replied "It is I St Peter"
ST Peter replied "O no, not another school teacher"
