I do not see why they want to stop with GeoCities, so far I have not found another free hosting site that even comes close to it's abilities! Even hosting files seems to be a problem for most! I read that yahoo was behind in thier techology, but I just cannot see this at all! Google is simply a group site and most others I have looked over insist to use thier templates, which are so limited that one cannot make much functionality or style from them! I hope to GOD that something change or another company take over GeoCities so that we can maintain all the work involved to our sites!

DLS...Why?

I don't think AC should consider the DLS.
There is a certain kind of pride that comes with hosting your very own website.
AC deserves that pride too.

Keep hunting AC!
Webs.com is pretty good, for starts.

I very seldom have any trouble with the DLS and I just hate looking all over the place trying to find a dependency. I very seldom download anything that's not on the DLS. With all due respect to you Woody, but my pride in my content is in the actual content, not where it's hosted.
Mike

Oh yes Mike, I truly did not mean it that way!
Its just that downgrading from a website to the DLS would not make me happy if I was him.
I'm not saying that the content on the DLS is not good.
In fact your content is some of the best on the DLS!

No offense but what's the sense if the DLS only works 20% of the time.
What did you do, Mike.....snatch that number out of the air...?:hehe:

Free sites aren't really free....somebody has to pay for the bandwidth....if they can't sell the ads, they close down. Seems like more of these sites are closing down and leaving their users hanging....

No offense taken, and I would agree if the 20% were true, but for me it works almost all the time. For all it's idiosynchracies and occasional glitches, I just like the idea of the DLS as a one-stop shop that Trainz and many utilities (CMP, Trainzobjectz, Trainz Agent etc) interact with automatically. No need to think of what website an asset may be on, no need to register for dozens of websites, no need to learn how to search each different one (and a lot of them are very badly organized or don't have decent search functions). And at least the DLS has some level of technical/manual quality check.

I think websites are a useful back-up library for assets and may satisfy the creator's ego, but for the day-to-day operation of Trainz, I don't care about the creator's ego or even who the creator is most of the time, I just want to find the stuff I need and get on with it.

So by all means put your stuff on a 3rd party website, but also maintain copies on the DLS and do us all a favour.

Well, yes and no. By reading all the troubles of those that post, it seems like only about 1 in 5 can get it to work these days.

That would be great if it worked properly. I really don't like the thought of having to try to upload something time and time again.

Auran is not free either! And there is two big problems with thier dls; One- the old assets are not removed when they are updated; Two- even they say is set to an outside link, payware can be stolen from it and policy is that all is to be freeware there anyway. So where are we to submit the works we spend months on, that sure was not free to make! You are right that they can leave us hangin, I have trusted and used yahoo for over seven years now, but I am even worried about my E-mail accounts!
Bottom line in todays world is, if you don't pay taxes, you do not have a right to breath!

I can see where you may get that impression, but I would contend that the negative posts on the forum are probably the vocal minority and that the silent majority are happy with it, so there's no need for them to post. It's like the news, good news doesn't sell, so the bad news is reported. I think there are over 350,000 members of the forum with only about 1% of them being active members. There's probably a lot of happy Trainz users out there that never visit the forum.

Mike,
What you said about the news is so true. Back in Illinois, we had a "Good News" section of the news channel! Only one thing everyday was listed.
Seems that good news does not come often.

I'm not trying to disagree with anyone. I'm just putting out my opinion. The DLS has its pros and cons. Just like anything else. Many creators choose not to upload to it for one reason or another. That is their choice. There are many who don't agree with their reasons but none the less, it is their choice.

Would it be easier if everything were uploaded to the DLS ? Of course it would ! There's no doubt about that.

I commend the guys at Auran for giving us the DLS. Not to mention the fact that they are really trying to get it working correctly. Matter of a fact, I uploaded some textures to it a while back. I had issues while trying to upload through CM2 and quickly gave up on that. However, what if (there are always what ifs) Auran never started the DLS ? What would people be doing then ? My guess would be what we have now. Many different websites for hosting content.

I never have any problem with it.
The only time it ever has an issue is when I've got more that four downloads at one time...but that is my computer!;)
The one thing that does annoy me is, when I'm downloading something that has multiple dependencies, I have to go the download page, click detailed, then click download page, then click FTP link and lo-and-behold it starts.
They could shorten that process by quite a bit.
I understand you want to see a picture of the asset but honestly, if you need it anyway, why not just cut to the chase?

My Opinions and Views...
