Virus Damage

Hi all,

I just got my workstation back from the shop after having the dozens of viruses removed from it. Everything on the system is restored, but I started up Trainz 2006 (unhappy with 2009, so I backtracked) and had an "....oh %^#*(#!" moment. A few errors have occurred.....:'(

1) For the past year or so, I have been using 2006 again for creating routes, and created many routes of high detail on it. Now it appears that they are still there in CMP, but when opened in Surveyor / Driver, an error popped up basically say that "You attempted to start Driver or Surveyor without having a map selected." In CMP, they are all clearly there, but just refuse to be seen when launching Trainz.:n:

2) In addition to not being able to open my custom routes, I can't open some of my locomotives / rollingstock. Most of the ones I can't open now are from separate freeware sites, but a few came from DLS. They appear in CMP, but are marked as "missing dependencies" or something of that sort. Theses are not major issues since I am sure I can just re-download these files.

3) When I tried to redownload stuff from DLS, I could not download it completely. The files appear in CMP in the download column, I press "Start" to download and commit the contents, but the download speed indicator / amount remaining for the day thing, remains still. It just flickers a few times until I press "Stop."

Now being curious, I opened 2009 to see if my one custom route was there...it was, but when I opened it up, all freeware downloads were no longer working. Something happened to both versions of Trainz, but I don't know what, or how to fix it.

*All I know is that the viruses were cleaned out, and a larger RAM memory was placed in the workstation.

I have many hours of work in Trainz and I would desperately like them to work again.......can anyone help me out here?

I had those same exact problems before. I remember reading a thread somewhere on here about getting back routes when surveyor says no map selected. It made me so frustrated. I am not to sure how to solve the download problem. It happened to me with some NYCT subway content in trainz 2006 and there were no missing dependencies and it did not show up.

Been There - Done That

I had a similar problem about a month ago. A rogue virus masking itself as something named System Tool 2011 managed to disable my AV and take over my PC (shutting off the Windows Firewall and hijacking the Windows Security Center and my Internet Explorer). Other than having no enabled AV, no internet access, and frequent virus driven pop-ups and scans telling me I had all these other viruses and needed to buy a licensed copy of System Tool 2011 to remove them, everything else seemed to work. I had a route named Denver to Cheyenne (both a version 1 and version 2) that I was working on along with dozens of other routes in TRS-2006. At that point they all still worked. As part of the “cure”, I was advised to restore my PC to a previous restore point before the virus took over the PC. I did that and this subdued the virus. I was able to get back on the Internet and update and run a malware program that located the virus on my PC and killed it. However, when I went back into TRS-2006 and selected either of two versions of my Denver to Cheyenne route I received the same message you received pertaining to the map not found issue. All my other routes still worked fine and I had no individual asset issues. Like you, I could see the routes in the CMP and could even open their config files so they appeared to be there. But Driver and Surveyor was telling me the maps could not be found.

On my PC, I ALWAYS start TADMON (a freeware and non-Trainz utility especially for TRS-2006) before I start Trainz or the CMP and it is set by me to capture the last 10 copies of the assets.tdx file. I immediately backed up all TDX copies to a safe folder and started replacing the current TDX file with these older versions until one finally worked and again gave me access to these Denver to Cheyenne routes. Now everything is fine once again and my many, many hours of work on this route was not lost forever.

In summary, it may be an assets.tdx file issue. But before you delete assets.tdx and allow CMP to rebuild your assets.tdx file you may want to get input from other 2006 veterans if they will respond. At the very least, make a copy (backup) of assets.tdx before you delete/rebuild it so you can at least get back to where you are now if the rebuild makes things worse.

Frankly, I strive to never ever let Trainz rebuild my assets.tdx file because of past problems I’ve had with it and “mysterious” asset changes that occur during the process. That is why I rely on TADMON and its ability to keep as many copies of previous TDX files as you care to store. But, you probably do not have TADMON so you may have to cast your fate to the winds. TRS-2006 is notorious for losing/destroying TDX files.

TAD Monitor

It is TAD Monitor. It was created (or at least last updated) in 2008. Do a Google search for TAD Monitor Trainz and you will get some hits. Apparently it may not work with Windows 7 (or at least the 64 bit version). I still use Windows XP, SP3 and it works fine in XP. I had a new PC built just over a year ago and I opted not to go with Windows 7 because TRS-2006 was built before all this Windows Vista/Windows 7 crap came along and I have not had much desire to go with TRS-2010 ( and 0 desire for the latest version). With the IE search you will find a link to TAD Monitor but it does not work for me. I have it as a zip file ( 3 MB) and could send it to you if you think your PC's operating system is a candidate for it.

TRS-2006, TAD Monitor, & Windows 7

I'm refreshing this post from May to ask a question of those using TRS-2006 and running Windows 7. Are any of you able to use TAD Monitor in Windows 7 or does it simply not work in Windows 7? Same question for anyone who tried TADMon with a 64 bit Windows XP version. I run it under Windows XP 32 bit.

I am using it successfully with Windows 7 , 64 bit. You don't need to run it as an administrator either.
