Vale Carlingford Line 1888-2020

the new Sydney Metro line extension, the M1, from Chatswood to Sydenham through the Sydney CBD opened last Monday and has, according to reports, been a roaring success carrying about 1 million riders in the first week of operation. It seems that everyone in Sydney must have been riding on it (alas not including myself - that pleasure will have to wait for a week or two).
Spoke too soon. It was such a beautiful winter day (a "Sprinter" day - combined Spring and Winter) that my partner and I decided to go out for lunch at the end of the new Metro Extension at Sydenham. Catching a metro from our nearest Metro station, Epping, it was a good fast (upto 100km/h) trip to Sydenham. Can't say much about the scenery because apart from 2 stations it is all underground.

The Metro is driverless which gives passengers an unequalled "drivers eye" view at each end of the train.

The new extension to Sydenham is 19km in length to add to the existing 36km from Tallawong to Chatswood.

The train was already heavily loaded, but not full, when it arrived at Epping but we still managed to find seats. It was packed by the time we crossed under Sydney Harbour. Most passengers left at the 3 Sydney CBD stops and it ran almost empty the remaining stops to Sydenham. This was a midday service with a train every 7 minutes so I can well believe the reports of 1 million riders during its first week of operation . It was the reverse on the way back. Sydenham is a light industrial area with little residential.

Off peak services are run at an interval of 7 minutes. Peak hour services are run at 4 minute intervals but the system can run trains at 2 minute intervals if required.

The line will be extended a further 15km from Sydenham to the southwestern suburb of Bankstown by converting the existing heavy rail commuter line to a Metro line. The conversion will start in the next few months and will be completed at the end of 2025. I will look forward to taking the entire 70km Metro trip from Tallawong to Bankstown.

Transport Vlog (Paul) had an interesting opening day on the Sydney Metro.

He also has many other extensive videos on the construction of the Paramatta tram line and the Sydney tram line.

Seeing this system, I'm jealous!

What can I say but more bad news.

There was some wishful thinking that the line may open before Christmas 2024 but it looks like Christmas 2025 may be closer to the mark!

During a routine test run last week a section of overhead wiring fell onto a tram. Examination of the wiring revealed that the fasteners that held it in place were faulty. An audit of the wiring elsewhere revealed that about 50% of the fasteners on the entire line are faulty. They will have to be replaced.

All testing has now been suspended until the work, which could take several months, has been completed.

What is next?

Better safe than sorry, I have worked around Transit System eons ago, still remember, our lines carried 3800 Volts, fortunately in our area, we didn't use a 3rd rail.

Cancel my last pessimistic post. The official opening date of the L4 Carlingford-Parramatta-Westmead light rail has been set.

The official announcement 2 hours ago from Transport NSW reads...

"Doors will open on the new L4 Westmead & Carlingford Line on Friday the 20th of December, with first passenger services departing Carlingford and Westmead light rail stops at 5.00am and Parramatta Square at 5:02am."

I will wait until a more suitable date/time (and not 5am) to take my first ride.

Daylight testing of trams through the Parramatta CBD has begun. This section of the line has no overhead power cables and the trams operate on internal battery power. This tram is leaving Parramatta Square Light Rail station heading for Westmead. Further to the right are the heavy rail station and bus interchange. Just to the left is the Parramatta underground Metro station (under construction) on the soon to be opened Western Sydney Metro line. The Parramatta Ferry terminal is about 1km away so the only thing missing is an airport - and that is currently being built at nearby Badgerys Creek as Sydney's second international airport.

@pware - Are these Siemens built? They look similar to our Grasshoppers here in Portland, Oregon, which are Siemens made.

The first passenger carrying runs started at 5am (local time) today. According to news reports it was standing room only with the vehicles carrying mostly train enthusiasts. I will wait for a more civilized time to experience the ride.
