Update, or go new?

What i understand from watching all the Tech Youtubers, The personal pc will be gone by 2040. Everything i have read, All these data centers are being built and pc parts are being priced out of reach so cloud computing can take over. I guess we are supposed to have a subscription fee to login to your own cloud pc. I am no way willing to go down that path. I believe that's why linux jumped from 2-5% market share. Regardless, I won't pay to own my own pc in the cloud. I will save and as long as pc components are around, I plan on building my own pc the rest of my life. I would like to hear from anyone that agrees or disagrees with why all these data centers are being flooded in our countries. We almost own nothing else, My trainz 22 and my pc is one of them that should be ours. I was replying to PWARES comment with much more of what i think in the near future.

I will not use the cloud unless given no choice. I was very disappointed with Microsoft's Flight Sim 2020, which was supposed to have worldwide image data. After buying the premium version, I found in my local area the buildings were the phoniest looking imitations of the real thing that I wondered what everyone was bragging about. A huge disappointment. And now the 2024 version is supposed to get the data from the cloud That is a lot of data to stream on a long flight! I hope to keep my own copies of Trainz versions right here on my PC. I was even disappointed when the only way I could get TS12 was via Steam. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but that means I am reliant on Steam, and I don't want to be.

Sadly that's the direction it looks like it's going. I also own fs 2020 and 2024. I use 2020 the most for it. I am comfortable the way N3V has continued to do things. Ya steam owns our games, Not us. people need to resist Microsoft as much as possible. I won't use any AI in windows. I am 49 soon, I was using trainz since the 1.0 version. I remember running to walmart and waiting until midnight for trainz and other pc games released. They would always make me wait until 12pm. Maybe i am old fashioned, But i miss those days. I want to own what i buy.

Trainz doesn't really take advantage of twenty core CPUs, memory is measured in nanoseconds, SSDs in milliseconds.
True, but unless you are a power user then the speed differences are unimportant. The slowest link these days is most likely to be your Internet connection and that is often outside your control. Trainz certainly does not need a "Power User PC" but my philosophy of replacing older PCs has more to do with future proofing than getting more out of Trainz. My current desktop is about 4+ years old and runs everything including Trainz Plus/TRS22PE just fine but who knows what TRS26 or TRS30 (if I am still around) may need?

why all these data centers are being flooded in our countries.
Three reasons - AI, AI and AI. Whether that promise will match the investment needed to build and run these power and water hogging data centres remains to be seen - personally, I have my doubts.

What i understand from watching all the Tech Youtubers,

Those tech Youtubers are interesting. I watched one recently that explained why the latest phones don't have SD card slots any more. Two reasons:-
  1. SD cards are much slower than the internal memory now used in phones and data transfers to/from them has become a serious bottleneck.
  2. They want you to rent cloud storage for the same $$$ per month that an SD card would cost for outright purchase and forever ownership with no monthly payments.
I use cloud storage but always below the data threshold for having to pay. I do not rely on it for my only backup copies of anything.

The “PC is dead” prediction has been wrong for 20 years straight
People said PCs would die in:

2007 (iPhone launch)

2010 (iPad)

2015 (Chromebooks)

2020 (cloud gaming)

2023 (AI hype wave)

Every time, PC sales dip… then surge again.

Why?
Because PCs fill a niche nothing else can.
