Union Pacific's FEF-4 - the "Super 800"

I found this article in my 2004 copy of ClassicTrains' "Steam Glory." I found it interesting, so I thought I would post part of it here.

Some of the features listed: poppet valves, vestibule cab, four smokestacks, 80" drivers, MB stoker, Type A superheater, revolving light mounted above main headlight, and roller bearings.

That would have been quite an engine. I sometimes wonder what they could have accomplished with the new alloys and chemistry if the steam era had lasted another decade.
