Hello Kyle,

What exactly is the error message? Also, please give us full details of your computer. Please run the trainzdiag tool and paste the results here.

Can you describe for me exactly what is happening when you try to start 04?

One place I would start is to edit the trainzoptions.txt file and add the following line to disable the startup video which has caused problems in the past:

-Intro=disable

This could be the cause - it is a place to start but if further problems occur, I need to know your machine specs - run the trainzdiag tool for me.

OK Bryce,

I followed your instructions and this is what happened: first the whole screen went black as if the game were trying to load, next thee screen came back on and a fatal error window came up. Where do I find the trainzdiag tool and the trainzoptions.txt file .
Sorry I don't know all of what you are talking about.
Thanks for helping.

Hi Kyle,

Before I can direct you, what operating system are you using? If it is vista - I won't be able to help though the direction should be more-or-less the same except for running as administrator which I am not able to help you with.
- Using Windows XP, open Explorer (my computer) and open the c: drive.
- Open Program Files folder
- Open Auran folder
- Open 2004 (I no longer remember the exact folder name)!
- Double click on TrainzOptions.txt (don't worry it the .txt is not visible - your computer may not be configured to show file extensions!)
- You should now be in notepad with the contents of the TrainzOptions.txt file revealed. Go to the bottom of the document and add the line:
-Intro=disable
Click on file -> Save and click on Yes to save the file
Click on File -> Exit to exit Notepad
- Close all open windows and start trs2004

If you are still not able to get 2004 to start do the following and post the results:
- Open Explorer (my computer) and open the c: drive.
- Open Program Files folder
- Open Auran folder
- Open 2004 folder
- Open Bin folder
- Double click on Trainzdiag.exe
- Post the results (cut and paste)

Bryce,

Sorry to bother you again but on TRS04, all the steam engines are puffing odd colored smoke:o . At the bottom of the smoke it is green colored and at the top, it is purple. I've not yet installed SP4, will it help if I do:confused: ?

Hi Kyle,

This really sounds like a either a video card or driver issue. Please run the TrainzDiag tool as outlined in my earlier post so we will know what type of hardware you have.

Also, definitly upgrade to SP4, though I do not think that alone will solve the different coloured smoke effects. I personally have never run against this particular issue which is why I am sure it is the video card and/or driver.

I, or someone else from the community, will be able to provide better assistance if you get us the hardware information.
