TransDEM newbie

Hello,

I will get straight to the point. I want to create some DEM maps for Trainz using TransDEM. I have downloaded the .hgt maps from here http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/SRTM3/Eurasia/ , loaded one in TD and , just as a test, i selected with the mouse a random area and exported it as a route for Trainz. It worked very fine, the relief was ok, but of course the map had no textures. Now, my question is how do i insert topo maps over the DEM so that i can export them both into Trainz and see them with the help of HOG textures? I tried to follow this tutorial http://transdem.de/download/public/misc/steamboateng/Unit2_CreatingDEMData_mbk.pdf but i do not understand what "NED Data" means and where do i get it. I did tried to load a .tif file like in the tutorial, i got my .tif from here http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp , but i receive an error, that the file is too big and i do not know how do i resize it without affecting the quality of the final product - the Trainz DEM.

Of course if there is another method of creating a map for Trainz with topo i am all ears :)

Thanks and if you need anymore details just ask me :)

Hello and welcome to Transdem!

The best thing to do is read the two documents that come with Transdem. Both contain excellent tutorials. Read the general manual first and do the tutorials in it. Then read the Trainz Specific manual and do it's tutorials.

I recommend the google earth approach but using anything greater than 500 metre altitude produces low resolution ground textures! What I do is use a 1k altitude to produce the UTM tiles, turn off the UTM grid and turn off the ground textures as well. This will produce 1k utm tiles that will not actually appear until you click the little "grid icon" at the top of your surveyor screen, then you will see the utm tiles under! I then model according to the tiles and place my textures, trees and structures.

Not sure if Trainz 2009 or above has an actual texture limit but previous versions did and using the ground textures from transdem caused me to go over on the limit in 2004 so I just turn that feature off and use the utm tiles to place the textures.

Hope this gets you started

Hello Okhiu,

Are you already a member within the Transdem Forum ( http://forum.transdem.de/ ).

If not, I advise you to become a member. Have a look within the tutorial section - video tutorials.

But the most important thing, like bchester said, is to read both manuals from A to Z and trying the tutorials and take your time to learn Transdem.

Best regards

Hello

I am already a memebr on TD forum. And as i said ...

Hello,

I tried to follow this tutorial http://transdem.de/download/public/misc/steamboateng/Unit2_CreatingDEMData_mbk.pdf but i do not understand what "NED Data" means and where do i get it.

Meanwhile i found the answer. This "NED/NAD Data" is only available for the US. http://ned.usgs.gov/ But i am trying to create a European map... :)

Ok, i started to read the documentation and make the tutorials.

So, the first question is:

In the "Tutorial 1: Georeferencing a Raster Map" , i have to click on the SW corne of the map end enter some coordinates (see photo below)

But when i click on that point, i get totally different coordinates (see photo)

Now, my question is, where are the coordinates from the tutorial taken from/calculated ? In the tutorial i enter them manually, and after that the other points (SE, NE) appear as in the tutorial. But if i want to georeference a different map than the one in the tutorial i will not know what coordinates to input there. Am i missing something?
