TrainzDem Assistance

What exactly did you purchase?

A DEM is a digital map of elevations, and completely application independent. More over, DEMs in excellent quality for the US are free. They are provided by the US Geological Survey on their websites, e.g. Seamless Server. (DEMs in reasonable quality for most places in the rest of the world are also free.)

Some people call a DEM-based blank Trainz route a DEM, which is not an accurate description.

Oh dear. Someone actually sold you TransDEM created data then? So, let's hope your business partner has a commercial TransDEM license, otherwise your purchase might have been illegal. Sorry to tell you that.

You should probably talk to the person who sold you the route - they should know what they gave you and how best to get it into Trainz. It may be as simple as dragging and dropping the folders into CM.

I swear to God Roland it wasn't me:hehe:

I give a few away on my site but I've never sold one…

but just from what I'm seeing if I understand correctly, somebody sold him the DEM, raster maps, UTM tiles etc. all the things he could get for free and didn't even bother to export it for him.

I would say he got ripped off…

On the other hand pencil might be onto something, it could be if he sent him two directories, one would be the actual route and the other would be a scenery directory that could be imported into Trainz via content manager, but again he would have to have Roland's TransDem textures installed for any type of texturing.

MRSCSI is the closest one but disagree with "ripped off". As I will mention again, I paid for the person's time, not the product and it needs to be understood as such. I have attempted to reach the individual who mentions often on the forum the abilities they possess on TransDEM for help, but I have not heard from this individual via email and was trying to figure out what I had with this post. The payment is also an exchange of product, not money and therefore after further thought GeoPhil's illegal purchase comment is invalid as funds were never exchanged.

The Raw Files are for me to have what I need to make a DEM after looking closely at the files and compare that to what I see in the Tutorial.

Second, I paid for the person's time, not the data. I was just under the impression I'd have a Finished Exported Item when this whole process began. This is why I asked for help, because I could not import anything and did not know if I was doing something wrong.

I will have to purchase TransDEM to process the Vector Data, WMS Stuff, and what ever else I now forget watching the tutorials. The GeoTiles I now have when imported into TransDem will be nice. I really doubt I would of been able to get the pieces / parts I was provided to do this, and now I have them.

Unfortunately, TransDEM Purchase can not be made at this time, however the RAW Data is ready, not a Completed DEM. As a matter of fact, what I have regarding **.dem files are not anything compiled thus why so many of them and this also includes other extensions I mentioned above. It is all stuff I could of obtained thru countless websites.

On a side note, people place very high standards on products, routes, etc and the ability to do this requires very time consuming and advanced skills anymore. We all need to realize that in order for quality to be achieved, we as a community need help with complex programs such as TransDEM to provide a route to the standards people expect. Not to be forgotten, we can not expect someone to be able to do it all, thus why I asked for help in the ability to create a DEM Route and compensated the person who has the skills for their time so I can easily get thru my first DEM Process with a 50% learning curve instead of a 100% learning curve.

This leads me to one additional point and a touchy subject to some, Payware. You are rewarding someone for their time and skills in a particular area, not really the product itself whereas if you were to put alll the time and effort into a particular project, go thru the learning curve, and also you would find that if the high quality of standards to many expect are met that the time you put into it may need to be rewarded.
