Trainz Videoz / Moviez

I am trying to create a short movie based on Trainz operations and am having quality problems for which suggestions would be welcomed. My initial "takes" are done with Fraps and, from my perspective, there are no problems there. The resulting files are very large, but the quality is high and the two factors are obviously inherently linked!

Because the only video editing software I currently have is Windows Movie Maker, I have to convert the Fraps "takes" to .wmv format and use SmartSoft Video Converter for that stage. Somewhere in the process of either converting, and/or editing, there is an appalling reduction in both video and audio quality.

Finally, trying to save the movie from WMM generally fails with around 58% saved! It would appear as if there is insufficient space somewhere in the saving process and while this is currently not a problem (really not worth saving!) ...... it will be for more worthwhile movies. Is there configuration somewhere that designates a certain capacity for specific programs to work within?

My goal would be to create a 30 min + video that would fit on a 4.7GB DVD which I am assuming gives me 'space' for pretty good quality.

Comments welcomed.

Thx. Colin.

Methinks you do not have Windows Media Player installed as your default player. You should not need to convert files taken using fraps. I have used both fraps and Movie Maker, and all my clips are saved instantly as Media Player files, which of course makes life easier when importing then into Movie Maker.

It is also possible that your fraps settings may need to be looked at.

Hi Padster - Thx for your feedback and ............ my apologies. I was clearly confused because my Fraps also saves to Windows Media and Movie Maker handles it ok with good quality. (I use the converter for digital camera conversions!!!!).

So we are now down to one issue: A movie file over around 30MB+ will not save to either CD or DVD. The process seems to stall at around 58%. This infers to me that there is a memory capacity factor getting in the way. Smaller files are ok so the process appears to function ok.

Any ideas on that?

Thx. Colin.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I can help you there Col. I always aim to keep my videos under nine minutes in length for You Tube purposes, and therefore I have never had problems putting them on a CD. Perhaps there is something already on the CD/DVD you are writing the files to? This has happened to me when burning audio CD's. Media Player won't continue with the writing process because there are already files on the disk. Maybe Movie Maker is the same.

Best wishes,
Padster

Are you saving the file to the hard drive and then tranfering it to the DVD drive or are you trying to save direct to the DVD, as in trying to use it as a hard drive.

In the case of video stream direct to DVD on your averge home PC is not a good idea as you can get what is called buffer over run which will stop the burn mid way through.

I have been trying to save directly to CD and to DVD. I guess I should try and save direct to computer and then load it to a DVD and see what happens.

Question though: Isn't there still a buffering process even when saving to computer?

Thx. Colin.

Yes but windows will use the system ram and hard drive poage file as it copies and not use packet drivers. Best thing is not to be multi tasking when burning also helps
